I am a long-time reader and admirer of OUTDOOR LIFE, but I feel compelled to write you about what I consider a glaring error in the article "Must This Land Die?" in your August 1973 issue. I quote from the story: "... and to cite one example of water use, the total flow of the famous Yellowstone River may have to be brought to the [generating] plants through aqueducts for cooling purposes.

Connecticut's Whitetails
[no value]

George Heinold
CONNECTICUT'S RURAL sections hold sizable populations of whitetail deer. Estimates of the state's deer herd have ranged between 6,500 and 8,000. I have seen bucks that weighed well over 300 pounds and antlers with 10 and 12 points. Aside from packs of free-roaming dogs that, during periods of deep snows, kill does and yearlings, Connecticut's deer have no natural enemies worth mentioning.

The bigger fish come later, but for anglers who may be impatient winter flounder can be counted on to make their annual appearance this month in Delaware's Indian River and Rehoboth bays. Many Deer in Penns Woods
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Stan Paulakovich
MORE THAN 100,000 whitetail deer were taken by Pennsylvania hunters in 1972. You can expect an even larger kill during the current season. An ideal spring and summer left the herd in prime physical condition and at peak numbers. The gypsy moth that invaded Penns Woods in the southeastern section and the oak-leaf roller that infested parts of the north-central and northeast sections so far haven't had any serious adverse effect on the deer's food sources.

B.E.
This is a good time to get lake survey maps from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Game, Augusta, Maine 04330. The maps cost 100 each. Some 1,500 lakes and ponds throughout the state have been surveyed by biologists. The maps show water depths in all sections of each lake. Species of gamefish and rough fish in the lakes are listed in the printed legend. The approximate population of each species is given, and the suitability of each lake for desirable gamefishes is explained.

ON THE DOCKET for December in Maine are hunting, limited ice-fishing, snowmobiling, and, for hardy individuals, snowtime camping. It is common nowadays to see winterized camping vehicles with snowmobiles or trail bikes in tow heading for destinations such as Acadia National Park. Trails in the park are carefully marked for snowmobiling. And the weather usually isn't too bad.

DAVID MICHAEL DUFFEY
SHOTS FROM Foin Morrison's 12-gauge Browning autoloader and my Ithaca 20-gauge over-and-under sounded like a duet for percussion instruments. The dogs broke to retrieve, and three quail hit the beaten-down cane on the ranch in southern Missouri.

GEORGE X. SAND
THE SIGHT WAS ONE I would not soon forget. One moment the leaden, windy, cold sky was unoccupied; the next it was turbulent with planing, twisting, diving ducks. Not since my boyhood on New Jersey's Barnegat Bay had I heard this great, fluttering sigh in the sky —swishing wings and the soft gabbling from hundreds of feathered throats—that can come only from a great aerial armada of moving wildfowl.

HOW WOULD YOU like to beat an Olympic shooting champion at his own game? A fascinating shooting sport recently imported from south of the border gives you a fair to even chance of doing just that. Even if there aren't any local Olympic champs to pick on, this new game will make the village blowhard put his money where his mouth is or go sit with the women and children.

Jim Emmett
JUDGING BY THE letters I receive, many readers of this department are interested in the larger, extensively equipped rigs— often in the 15to 20-foot class. And the questions I am asked about smaller boats usually are about the canoes, inflatables, and fiberglass hunting boats and car-toppers that are fast replacing the old-time outboard skiffs and rowboats.

THIS IS WORK! I wish these fish weren't down so deep," Bill Sturges said between puffs, and wiped his forehead after he had brought in his 12th bluefish from the depths with wire line and a trolling drail. "It's work, all right," I agreed, using my thumb to lay wire as evenly as possible on the spool of my reel as I slugged it out with another 15-pound blue.

G. Howard Gillelan
AN OLD FLYFISHING crony of mine claimed that you can judge a trout angler's ability by the amount of equipment he carries to the stream. He said a fisherman's gear should be reduced to the lowest common denominator. My friend had only the bare essentials in his fishing jacket, yet he was prepared for almost any situation—and he caught fish.

MAN-AND-DOG AGES
[no value]
[no value]

David Michael Duffey
FOR MANY YEARS men have compared their own lifespan with the years normally allotted their boon companion, the dog. Comparing ages of dogs and men during the stages of their development is more than just an exercise. Since men presumably understand their own kind better, comparing a dog's development to a man's can lead to better understanding and appreciation of a dog by his owner and give some idea of what can be expected of a dog at various ages.
