In “What’s On Your Mind?” for March, 1971, OUTDOOR LIFE ran the item “Can You Help Us?,” reprinted here. Someplace years ago I saw a large picture hanging in a place of business. It might have been in Canada, possibly in a railroad depot.

IN THIS COLUMN last month I reported on some of the new year's new gear, as I saw it displayed at the National Sporting Goods Association trade show, held recently in Chicago. I'll com plete that report this month. As I said in the previous column, I haven't given the prices for many of these items, because they haven't yet been established by retail outlets.

About this time of year, young marksmen with their first .22's make their first woodchuck hunt and veteran hunters try some long-range chuck hunting to test their skills, nerves, and flat-shooting varmint rifles. I myself started on woodchucks with a Stevens Favorite .22 more than half a century ago.

WHAT’S after that whitebait?” Big Mike Mikalavicius asked me as he pointed excitedly at a tide rip 150 yards off our bow. “Stripers? Blues? Sharks, maybe?” “It could even be pollock or early-summer cod in that particular rip,” I told Big Mike as I leaned to one side, trying to counterbalance his movements.

J. A. Emmett
NAVIGATION IS the art of finding your way around even in a strange area or under adverse conditions. Just how you manage it depends largely on where you use your boat. If you operate on a large open body of water, it’s sensible to acquire a working knowledge of formal piloting and navigation.

LAST FEBRUARY, under the title “What’s on the Mind of Earl Guess?” OUTDOOR LIFE published an eloquent and moving letter from a Louisiana sportsman. It mounted an angry protest against air and water pollution, littering of all kinds, the destruction of woods and wild places by developers’ bulldozers that “chew, paw, cut, and scrape everything clean,” creeks and branches ruined and wildlife habitat wiped out, “all for the sake of the big dollar.”

UPLAND GAME IS GOING TO POT in the Midwest. And if hunters and conservationists are not careful, uplandgame hunting could do the same. The pot that the game is going to is marijuana or wild hemp, often called “pot” by its high-flying advocates. It grows as a weed in many Midwestern States.

THE WIND CAUGHT US in the middle of Ontario’s Kesagami Lake, two miles from the mainland shore. The rain pelted us in winddriven sheets, blurring our vision and soaking under our raingear. Limits of 15-to-18-pound pike were sloshing around in a foot of water in the bottom of the 22-foot freighter canoe.

A Taste of Nostalgia

Jack O'Connor
SAVAGE IS GIVING gun buyers a nice bit of nostalgia this season with the revival of a collector’s edition of the old Stevens Favorite single shot in .22 Long Rifle caliber. It is likewise adding to the nostalgia by bringing out a classic Model 99 lever-action rifle for the good but dying .250/3000 Savage cartridge, but more of that anon.

JACK O'CONNOR
I ruffled the feathers of my old friend Robert Chatfield-Taylor when I mentioned in a recent issue that the unfortunate .358 Winchester cartridge had given headspace troubles in the Model 70 Winchester rifle. Bob said there was nothing to it— that the shoulder of the .358 was sufficient to hold the case against the blow of the firing pin and that if anyone had run into cases shortened from head to shoulder it was because sizing dies had been incorrectly adjusted.

HENRY MOORE
Instant Bait. The freeze-dried process has spread from coffee and food to fishing baits. Several firms will be making nightcrawlers, worms, and other baits that may be kept fresh indefinitely without requiring refrigeration. You prepare your baits about like making coffee.
