Not too long ago, OUTDOOR LIFE reported two fish that would have made the record book had they not been eaten before the anglers recognized the significance of their catches. Although such misfortunes are discouraging to taxidermists, they are equally disappointing to fishermen themselves and our fisheries biologists.

AFTER ALL THE FUSS that's been kicked up by the promoters of the Women's Liberation Movement, it's about time for this department to discuss the role of the allegedly gentler sex in archery. Before I'm denounced by the likes of Kate Millet and Betty Friedan, let me point out that most bowmen recognize the importance of ladies in archery.

THE MOST FRUSTRATING DAY of the year for New York State fishermen is opening day of the trout season. They can’t be in more than one place at a time. Many have their favorite streams where limit catches are almost assured on April 1. And even on opening day, some of these productive but little-known brooks will be almost deserted.

VERMONT IS MORE FORTUNATE than some Northeastern States in that its population is small and its hatcheries have a limited capacity for producing two-yearold trout. THERE WILL BE THE USUAL trout season in New Jersey this spring, but it will be the first one without brook trout, for years the backbone of early-season stockings. The little native has been hard hit. Pancreatic necrosis, kidney disease, and gill rot have taken such a heavy toll that authorities at the Hackettstown hatchery haven’t even stripped adult female brookies for eggs, the first step toward propagation and future stockings.

HOLGER JENSEN
RUSSIANS TALK a great hunt. They titillate the Western sportsman with pictures, trophies, and exciting tales of the chase. But getting Ivan to take you afield is another matter. The weather is never right, or the season is closed, or it's some kind of Communist holiday that requires labor devotions to fulfill the current five-year plan.

TED JANES
THE DAY OF CHIVALRY IS dead, and so is the day of etiquette. I was forced to make that melancholy conclusion when Herb Dalton hung a 3 ½-pound landlocked salmon off Simpson’s Beach just five minutes after we had embarked upon Maine’s Sebago Lake.

MY BROTHER WINSTON AND I have had many opportunities to test game calls on a wide variety of animals, from lions in Africa to lynx in Canada and the many predators we have in the United States. But of all these animals there is none more wily than the coyote, none that answers a call faster or leaves the scene quicker once it senses danger.

I walked into the tackleshop at Cliff Wilson’s fishing dock on Blue Ridge Lake and found Cliff bent over the counter with his head cradled in his arms. “You look sick,” I said. “I am sick,” he replied. “A fellow just brought in the remains of what must have been the biggest bass ever taken out of this lake.”

THE LURE MOVED lazily near the surface as the current swept it near an old willow tree that grew out of the water on a bend in the river. I saw a yellowish flash and at the same time felt a solid shock in my rod hand. The fish bored deep, and line fairly hissed through the water as the fish headed back for his lair under the tree.

WE HAD ARRIVED at our preselected calling stand later in the morning than I wished. Turkeys had been down from roosts for at least an hour. I learned long ago that the choicest time to call a gobbler in spring is from the moment the bird hits the ground at dawn until about an hour afterward.

IEASED THE electric motor into the water from the bow of my 14-foot boat and flicked the switch to slow. Then I picked up one of the four casting rods neatly positioned behind the big tacklebox on the middle seat. The sun was shining. There was a freshness only early May can bring, and a soft breeze touched the placid surface of the western-Washington lake.

THE INDIAN-SUMMER DAY began quietly enough. Nine of us left camp in Michigan's Upper Peninsula before dawn on September 10, 1969. We had three pickups, my car, and 15 top bear hounds. We drove several miles down a gravel road to an area where members of the group had found fresh bear sign a week earlier.

THE WARM April sun cleared the balsam ridge behind our cabin, glittered on the yardlong icicles that gripped the eaves, and threw slanting rays across the grainy "corn" snow piled on the shoreline and drifted out on the frozen lake. Two red squirrels clattered up the circular staircase of a small jack pine, pausing on a limb to chatter at a sleepy-eyed muskrat that was pushing a mouthful of salad through an airhole in the lake ice.

THE OUTDOORS who enjoys his activities the most is probably the one who knows the most about the outdoors. An increased knowledge of wildlife, for instance, gives the hunter a better chance of succeeding in his sport. In addition, it helps him to gain a deeper appreciation of nature.

David Michael Duffey
COMPARISONS involving the worth of hunting dogs should, in strict fairness, be made on an individual rather than a breed basis. It is individual dogs that will satisfy individual owners. However, many sportsmen get "stuck on" or "down on" a particular breed, even though their contact with a variety of gun dogs may be limited.

HENRY MOORE
Shuteye Deadeye. Alabama's luckiest deer hunter must be Pleasant Grove’s Johnny Edwards. Because he decided it wasn't his day, he curled up under a tree and went to sleep within a quarter-mile of the checking station. He awoke to see a four-pointer approaching, fired one shot, and took home a 163-pounder.—Walton Lowry, Birmingham (Ala.) News.
