Lake Michigan yielded a new worldrecord coho salmon last October. At 33 lb. 3 oz., the fish was 2 lb. 3 oz. heavier than the previous world record, a 31pounder caught in British Columbia back in 1947. And Michigan fishery authorities say the lunker may have weighed even more before it made its way into the Little Manistee River, since salmon usually lose some weight when they leave open water and migrate into a spawning stream.

MODERN FIBERGLASS AND aluminum boats require very little maintenance, and improved paints and cleaning products have made even wood and canvas-covered boats easier to care for. Sooner or later, however, your boat, regardless of its construction, will probably need some touching up or perhaps a complete paint job.

I WOULDN’T SAY that if you’ve seen one field-archery club you’ve seen them all. The majority of the fieldarchery clubs I’ve visited, however, seem to fall into the same general pattern. There’s a 28-target course, a few practice butts, maybe some special bales for broadheads, and a clubhouse.

Reindeer were introduced into Alaska in 1892 as food animals for the Eskimos along the coast. Whalers had so depleted the seafood supply that other food sources were urgently needed. The reindeer solved the problem perfectly, furnishing food, hides, and even milk.

JACK O'CONNOR
I MADE MY FIRST safari in 1953. With two Texans, I hunted from central Tanganyika to the northern frontier district (N.F.D.) of Kenya. We were in the field for over two months. Each of us got lion, buffalo, and rhino. I did not take out an elephant or a leopard license, but my companions did, and on this, their first safari, each got the so-called Big Five.

THE POCONO MOUNTAIN area in Pennsylvania can be crowded, expensive, and over-commercialized. It can also be a fabulous place to enjoy a low-cost stay in the outdoors. A sensible way is to go camping, and it would be hard to find a more central location than Promised Land State Park on Route 390 between Canadensis and Hawley in Pike County.

Here’s how to make a trolling weight that also serves as a fish attractor. Solder a small swivel to each end of three or four feet of ⅛-inch-diameter solder wire. It’s strong. Paint the wire in two-inch sections with red, white, green, and yellow paints.

Take it Easy for Early Trout
[no value]

John O. Cartier

DONALD Du BOIS
What do you know about hounds? What are they? Where did they come from? What do the good ones do? How do the not-so-good ones sometimes lie, cheat, and steal? Which special words do hound men use? What are field trials like? The quiz that follows asks questions about such things.

Marshall Bucholz
When carrying nightcrawlers in a tin can or bucket, cover the soil with a wet rag. It will keep the soil moist and cool and eliminate the need for a lid.

KEEP IT SIMPLE
Follow this chef’s advice and you’ll find out how savory deer meat can be

FRED LUKS
