I'm 13 years old and an eighth-grader at Homer-Union, a small school in Morgan County, Ohio. I read in your March issue about another 13-year-old boy whose first buck was an 11-pointer he shot in North Carolina. I think I have something in common with this other boy.

Jim Rearden, author of 25 stories published in OUTDOOR LIFE since 1954, has been appointed to a three-year term on Alaska's 10-member Board of Fish and Game by Gov. Keith H. Miller. IN THIS COLUMN last month I described some of the items that will make camping in the 1970's more pleasant and convenient. This month we'll look at more new equipment, some of which will please the ladies in particular. To go with the new look in camp stoves, there is a new stainless-steel Teflon-coated pan-and-pot set.

There are several nice things about quail. They provide great sport, bring out the best in dog and hunter, and are simple to prepare and delicious to eat. The Lord seems to have designed these birds as a reward for a gunner's marksmanship. Most old-timers pluck, rather than skin, these little birds.

Navigation for Fishermen
[no value]

J. A. Emmett
FOR THE FISHERMAN, navigation might be defined as the art of skippering a boat safely from its dock or launching ramp to the fishing grounds and then back home again. Navigation skills have grown in importance to many fishermen because of today's larger, faster, more able boats and the attendant expanded fishing horizons.

IT WAS ONE of those magic times all snook fishermen dream about. A fat orange-red Florida sun had risen, and I could see the white beaches on both sides of Marco Pass. The strong spring tide flooded in from the Gulf, churning the water into eddies that built up steadily.

The leaves were still dusted here and there with snow that had fallen lightly a few days before. They were so noisy that I think I could have heard movement in them at twice that distance.

THE STOCK of the hunting rifle Should be designed for use. It should be shaped, proportioned, and balanced so it can be aligned on the target quickly, so it can be held steady and carried comfortably, so it minimizes recoil, and so it can be shot well in any hunting position from offhand to prone.

When it comes to parenthood most fish couldn't care less. One way or another, they usually finish family chores in a hurry and then forget the whole business. Some species don’t even bother with nest building. Others build elaborate homesites, but few parents stay around long enough to care for their progeny.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AN EARLY BIRD to catch your fishing worms anymore! With this clever device, you simply insert the rods into the ground five feet apart. Then, connect the plug to an extension cord. After receiving a slight shock, the worms appear on the ground surface. The plug must be disconnected before removing the rods from the ground. The WORM GETTER may be purchased by mail from Taylor Gifts, Dept. O.L., 211 Conestoga Road, Wayne, Pa. 19087.

ON A SULTRY DAY in the early fall of 1960, a unique bowhunt took place. So far as we know, it was the first time an archer in this country bagged a deer with an arrow that could be termed poison-tipped. Instead of a broadhead, he used a special hypodermic syringe and a drug that resembles curare.

I find it pays to save a few of those keytype openers that come attached to cans of food such as corned beef and sardines. I keep one on a nail in my cabin, another in my tacklebox, and a third on my keyring. So when I buy a can and find its key is missing, or when I'm opening a can and the metal strip breaks off before I’ve finished, I use one of my spares.
