So far as I have been able to find out, the smallmouth bass in this picture (see below) is the second-largest ever caught anywhere in the United States. Taken from Dale Hollow Lake in northern Tennessee last April, it was 26¼ in. long, 21½ in girth, and weighed 10 lb. 14 oz.

C. B. Colby
SNOWMOBILING, the newest and fastest-growing winter sport, is taking more and more families into the woods, and many of them are suddenly becoming interested in coldweather camping. Camping has several benefits for snowmobilers. It enables them to make extended "snowfaris" without having to worry about getting back before dark, it gives them a chance to enjoy winter evenings and sunrises, and it gives experience in cold-weather camping that might make some future wilderness breakdown an exciting experience instead of a tragedy.

To THE AVERAGE American, Valley Forge means George Washington steadfastly trying to maintain the morale of the ragged frostbitten men who were our first G.I.'s. I had that feeling about the Philadelphia suburb until I visited Valley Forge during an international Boy Scout jamboree some years ago.

THIS IS THE time of year when boat owners in most areas of the country begin laying up their rigs for the winter. The importance of proper storage should not be minimized. A severe winter can do a lot of harm to an improperly stored boat—even a modern fiberglass or aluminum craft.

WHEN CANADA GEESE BEGIN HONKING on their migration flights this fall, New York State hunters who are in the know will start enjoying some of the finest waterfowl shooting in the country. Understandably, these hunters haven’t been shouting the news from the housetops, but for four years now two vast federal wildlife refuges in upstate New York have been open to controlled public hunting.

IN LATE AFTERNOON I turned onto the old trail, climbed back toward the Continental Divide, and reached the small lake in the pass a half-hour after sunset. Working fast in the fading light, I gathered firewood from windfalls of dead timberline firs. I built the blaze so that the heat would reflect back from a huge boulder.

IT WAS THE LAST Saturday in September. The foliage was still heavy and green in central Maine, for we had not had the usual frost to pinch the leaves from the trees. We were hunting in the mountainous western section of Virginia, north of historic Lexington, where the ridges, steep as country-church roofs, had been whitened by an unusually early winter snow.

Col. H. J. Samuels
DOES THE SNOWMOBILE have a place in big-game hunting? I think it does, but it's important to spell out just what that place is. Sure, I know that a few fellows have shot their game from snowmobiles, and others have chased animals to sheer exhaustion.

That remote deer lair, icy lake, or fox hangout is no longer inaccessible in winter. In fact, getting there is fun
[no value]
[no value]
JOHN O. CARTIER
SOME YEARS AGO I hunted deer in a remote area north of my home in Ludington, Michigan. There are no roads within miles, but a deteriorated logging trail snakes into vast deer hideaways of sand dunes and jack-pine pockets. A four-wheel-drive vehicle will get you in there before there's snow on the ground.

Fun Of Snowmobiling
Race or jump the machines, go skijoring, make a "snowfari"— imagination is your only limit
[no value]

C. B. COLBY
TO MOST OWNERS of snowmobiles, the main reason for having one is the sheer fun of running and riding it. Anything else is a fringe benefit. The new owner learns to drive the machine and then takes to the country to test his skill in the comparatively wide open spaces, where he can climb and turn and buzz around through the snow to his heart’s content.

ONCE YOU HAVE LEARNED to handle the snowmobile with skill and confidence, the next step is to absorb the few simple rules that will assure safety for you and your passenger in its use. But to begin with, John Fleming, manager of the National Safety Council's Public Safety Department, warns: "Novice snowmobilers should never go into areas where help is not easily obtained!"

AS I BALANCED on one knee on my snowmobile, following Jack Doty through the pine, birch, and popple woods near Grand Rapids, Minnesota, I felt like an explorer. Here we were, breathing the fresh, clean January air of wild country, off on an ice-fishing jaunt to a hidden lake previously considered inaccessible in winter.

THE TREMENDOUS ENTHUSIASM with which the public has taken to snowmobiling has suddeniy presented some serious problems of handling and use. Often, "instant" winter sportsmen are the unsuspecting casualties. The snowmobile is so simple to operate and there are so few restrictions on who can operate them that they are deceptively dangerous.

WHEN YOU travel across country do not toss litter from the machine into the snow, for it will reappear next summer for all to see. Don't leave litter at a picnic spot or campsite, and never throw it into the water. Take it out with you unless rubbish containers are provided at the site and are regularly emptied.

David Michael Duffey
EVERYBODY KNOWS what a Foxhound is. At least, there are few persons who'd fail to describe a Foxhound as some kind of a longeared dog that chases foxes. But beyond that cursory description —and though the Foxhound is the oldest sporting breed known in the U.S. —anyone trying to define a Foxhound is bound to encounter plenty of arguments and qualifications.

VIN T. SPARANO
California quail hunters can’t complain this season. Gunners can take 10 of these birds a day, and the season runs from October 25, 1969, through January 11, 1970. These regulations could actually be twice as lenient, and it wouldn’t make much difference.

HENRY MOORE
Special Delivery. When the Ohio Wildlife Division needed a muskellunge to display at Akron field headquarters, employe Dick Ramsey said he’d catch one in time. Dick showed up just 10 minutes before deadline with a pair of muskies—40 and 38¼ in.—that he and a friend had caught from Pleasant Hill Lake.
