Dear Senator Dodd: As the parent of young, impressionable children, I am deeply concerned about the growing wave of immorality that is sweeping over our nation. It would be a great contribution to the American people if you would sponsor a bill, based on the same commendable principles as your gun-control bill.

Where to Hit Deer
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
G. Howard Gillelan
ALMOST EVERY bowhunter, including the rawest greenhorn, knows he should aim for a deer's chest cavity because that's where the animal's vital organs are—the heart and the large blood vessels that lead into it, the lungs, and the liver. A hit there gives a razor-sharp broadhead the best chance to do its job.

Plugs From Ball Points
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
R. H. Richter
A ball-point pen can easily be converted into a plug for walleyes. First, remove all the inside mechanism. Then insert a heavy rustproof wire through the length of the pen and form a loop at each end of the wire. Attach a split-ring and treble hook to what was the writing end. Slip a split-ring (with treble hook attached) over the end of the pocket clip on the cap. Solder the end of the clip to the cap if the cap is metal, or solder the ring to the clip if the cap is plastic.

THE HUGE RAM'S HORNS shone in the sunlight as he slowly turned his head to look across the slopes. The horns were massive and even, and they seemed to be longer than a curl and a half. I was lying on my stomach at the edge of a cliff about 100 yards above him.

Big Bears Come Harder
I find that one hunting rule has become stricter than ever: if you ever hope to get a big brown, then you must think and act like a bear
[no value]
[no value]
CLYDE ORMOND
WHEN AN EXCEPTIONAL big-game animal gives the hunter any kind of a chance, the hunter should take advantage of it. Big-game animals don't reach their full stature and become prime specimens by being stupid. Such animals rarely make a mistake that favors a hunter, and they seldom give the hunter a second chance.

Alaskan Guides In Uproar Over Bear Restriction
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Ben East
The registered guides of Alaska face a tough new curb on guiding bear hunters this fall, and many of them are up in arms about it. In an effort to give added protection to brown and grizzly bears and reduce an annual kill that many believe is too high, the Alaska Fish and Game Board, the state's 10-man policy-making conservation agency, has put into effect a regulation forbidding any guide to take out, guide, or assist more than three brown or grizzly hunters in a year.

Unexpected change in living standards makes the northern-pike population boom

TED JANES
UP ON THE forward deck of the 23-foot cruiser, Ned Holmes was casting a red-and-white spoon to the edge of weed beds in New York's Seneca Lake. Down in the cockpit, I was trying to learn the intricacies of live-lining for northern pike, a technique that isn't so simple as you might think—at least, not the way my guide, Bob Cass, handles it.

TENNESSEE'S "Diana Deer Hunt" was the first deer hunt for women only ever held in the nation. Forty-seven women showed up for the special hunt last November 17 and 18 on the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission's wildlife management area at the Arnold Engineering Development Center near Tullahoma.

IT WAS 1 A.M., and Lake St. John was truly a thing of beauty. The Louisiana moon had climbed above the maze of cypress trees and was flooding the water's surface with lambent patterns of light. A warm June breeze swayed the beards of gray Spanish moss as I worked our boat into position.

I'd been watching the tree-lined shore 50 yards to the left of our 18-foot outboard boat. Now I quickly shifted my attention to the far end of the bay, 400 yards in front of us.

LONG BEFORE WE REACHED the Dean, the four of us had made an agreement. Nobody was to fish until camp was completely set up. Considering all we had heard about this far-off and fabulous spot, we didn't think the delay would be much of a handicap, and the way our excitement and eagerness were mounting we needed some sort of rule to give everybody an equal start.

AS I READ Jack O'Connor's story in the March 1968 issue of OUTDOOR LIFE about his wife Eleanor's "Thirty-Year Elk Hunt," a wave of nostalgia went through me in spite of Jack's description of that frigid, snowy hunt in November 1935. I was there and weathered the cold with the O'Connors.

Jack O'Connor
THE RUGER M/77 bolt-action rifle is at once both old and new. It is old in that the action is basically of Mauser design like the actions of most contemporary rifles operated by bolts. It is new in that as we shall see it is a clever combination of some new features and some new manufacturing techniques with a bringing together of features found particularly desirable in other designs.

[no value]
[no value]
There will be no special early teal-hunting season this year, according to an announcement from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Early teal hunting was established as a three-year experimental season, with seasons set in 1965, 1966, and 1967. All aspects of the three seasons are being evaluated to determine if the early hunting adversely affected the continental teal and total duck populations.

A CRUDE stone ax was undoubtedly one of the first weapons made by man. Perhaps some caveman, after fastening a stone to the end of a stick to produce a club, found that the stone's sharp edge could be used to efficiently gash a tree—or another caveman.

FALL CAN BE the best time of year for the boatman-outdoorsman. After Labor Day, pleasure boatmen who use their boats largely for fast running and water skiing begin laying up their rigs. The larger bodies of water start to get uncomfortable—sometimes even unsafe—as winds get more boisterous and the weather cools.

HENRY MOORE
Salmon Tie. Vern Shipley and Archie Vinton are two old-timers who have alternately caught the first chinook salmon of the season at Nehalem Bar for the past 10 years. Each angler thought he had it again this year until the 29-pounder came alongside their boat with both of their lines.
