Here’s a photograph (see below) of an antelope I shot near Forsythe, Montana, during the 1966 season. I was hunting with guide Gale Younbauer, John Sundt, Curly Fontaine, and Don Henningfield. The taxidermist who mounted the head considered it a freak head as well as a fine trophy.

C. B. Colby
A COUPLE OF years ago, as my wife Lila and I relaxed after supper in a wilderness campground in Canada, a load of campers drove up to the site next to ours. We assumed from their actions that they were going to stay for a week or more. Members of the party unloaded a tent large enough for a small revival meeting and enough camping gear for an entire Boy Scout troop.

ONE DAY last August when the fog seemed thick enough to slice, I had a unique experience. If I live to be as old as a tortoise, I’ll remember it vividly. I was fishing with Hal Benson and Joe Rohmer, two Southern angling friends of mine. They had trailered a 21-foot skiff to Nova Scotia for some bottom fishing out of Shelburne, a picturesque fishing village a short drive east from the city of Yarmouth.

TOM McNALLY
IT HAD BEEN eight years since my last visit to Gods River, the famous brook-trout stream that flows out of Gods Lake, 365 wilderness air miles north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Now, as I peered out a window of the bush plane, I saw Gods River rapids and the log buildings that are Tom Ruminski’s Gods River Lodge.

THE BULL MOOSE stopped grunting. Now I could hear nothing but the gurgling rush of the creek under the ice. I carefully reached down and filled my coffeepot in the current. Open water had closed to four feet across, and in the quieter pockets anchor-ice was freezing from the bottom up.

IT WAS AUGUST 14 and a beautiful day to be afloat. The wind had caused a mild chop on the Pacific early in the morning, but now the ocean was calm. The bright afternoon sun had burned off the haze and caused the water to take on a deep blue color. As we headed toward Los Coronados Islands off Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, a tiny yellow-throated bird lighted on our deck to rest its wings.

CARL T. JOHNSON
EVEN IF ITS HAIR isn't bristling the wrong way, a 300-pound bear standing on his hind feet is a spine-chilling thing to look in the eye at 10 feet—especially if he’s looking right back at you and your rifle is jammed. I know, for that’s what confronted me on a hunt in the Baraga district on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula last October.

A FEW YEARS AGO, I thought I had about as much chance of fishing in Labrador as I had of landing on the moon. I'm not exactly rich, so I felt that the closest I’d ever come to spruce-covered tundra was via Sunday-afternoon television. But now, in July 1967, here I was, along with five other fishermen of average means, outboarding down Marble Lake in far-western Labrador.

SOME YEARS AGO while deer hunting in the mountains, I was quietly following a deer trail. I came to an abrupt stop when I saw a bowman at full draw about 75 yards ahead of me. Brush concealed his target. The archer released. I anticipated a frenzied thrashing in the leaves and expected to see a shadowy dark-brown shape darting through the forest.

A SINGLE BIRD came from the direction where the beaters had disappeared, his wings twinkling as he drew swiftly nearer and headed right for my blind. "Perdiz!" my secretario said. I knew that perdiz (pronounced perTHEESE was the name for the Spanish red-legged partridge, so when the lone bird was about 40 yards away I arose, swung swiftly from behind the bird, blotted it out with the barrels, and slapped the trigger.

J. A. Emmett
I'M OFTEN asked whether it is advisable to update a boat trailer or better just to buy a new one. The answer, of course, depends on several factors. If your trailer is still structurally sound and is big enough to do a proper job of towing your boat, motor, and load of gear, updating is perfectly practical.

Fishermen who feel the days of unspoiled waters and native trout are gone have probably never heard of the Spotted Bear River in Montana. This beautiful little river starts high in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, south of Glacier National Park, and joins the South Fork of the Flathead some 60 miles south of Hungry Horse Dam.

HENRY MOORE
Water Haul. The best catch on the Chichester for my money was made by a goateed angler who hooked and landed my bait box, loaded with a day’s supply of garden worms. The box went adrift when I skidded off a rock but saved myself from a dunking by grabbing onto a willow bush and clawing my way back up the bank.
