Mrs. Maye Dando of New Bedford got the only recorded bear among hunters in Forest County, Pennsylvania, during the 1966 season, and has some story to tell. This picture (see below) shows Mrs. Dando with her black bear. According to Mrs. Dando, she decided to get a bear so she could move her husband’s mounted deer head to make room for a trophy of her own.

IT has IS tough stood for to tie 54 a years world and record not that get official credit for it, but it happened to Charles Eric Cinto, 38-year-old Mansfield, Mass., printer. He boated a 73pound striped bass at 4 a.m. on June 16 aboard Capt. Frank Sabatowski’s New Bedford charterboat June Bug off Cuttyhunk Island’s Sow and Pigs reef.

WHILE VISITING the charterboat fishing ports on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, I was invited aboard an offshore cruiser by her skipper, a topflight deep-sea fisherman of long experience. I accepted, mainly to observe angling techniques, look over fishing grounds new to me, photograph fishing action and rigs, and otherwise expand my knowledge of the area.

KEN MUIR’S WHISPER was a startled gasp. “Hold it,” he said. “There’s a buck standing up there.” Ken and I had been walking slowly along the edge of a creek bottom half an hour before sunrise. When I looked up, a buck stood like a statue on a knoll against the yellow predawn glow.

BOB HAATAJA
THE 1966 DEER SEASON on the Keweenaw Peninsula, northern Michigan’s Copper Country, opened on November 12 and was due to close on the 27th, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Up to Thanksgiving day, our whole family had no luck. My dad, my brother Bruce, and I had hunted hard and had seen deer almost every day, but nothing that we wanted to shoot.

HERE GOES NOTHING,” I told Mary as I gently cast a nightcrawler toward some gurgling white water near the head of the willow-fringed canyon pool. Unchecked by the weight of a sinker, the squirming nightcrawler rolled in the current and drifted slowly downstream.

Luck Beats The Odds
Maybe we should have suspected something when we saw how easy it was to get goat permits for Area 20. There had to be a catch, and did we find it!

ED PARK
IN A LETTER to my brother-inlaw Bill Morgan, I began, “I just found out why Area No. 20 isn’t very popular. Each of the past three years they’ve given out 25 tags, but a total of only four goats have come out of there in those three years.” Bill lives in Kennewick, Washington, and is a research engineer at the Hanford Atomic Works; I’m a free-lance photographer and writer in Bend, Oregon.

IT WAS AN overcast spring morning, gloomy and still but with a fresh, washed smell thanks to an overnight rain. Dead timber standing in the water cast weird patterns on the glassy surface. Jack Valentine turned our boat from the inundated channel of the Angelina River and threaded it through the trees and brush until he sighted a floating cypress log.

CHARLES ELLIOTT
A DECADE AGO Florida was one of the best duckhunting states on the Atlantic flyway. Large numbers of waterfowl wintered there, and gunners got their limits almost anywhere in the state. In the past few years, other types of Florida hunting have been upgraded, but waterfowl hunting slipped so alarmingly that game biologists became deeply concerned.

DEMPSEY CAPE
ANY EXPERIENCED HUNTER has learned to live with disappointment. It’s part of the game. He knows that no matter how far the tide of his fortunes might ebb, there is always a turning point. I tried to console myself with that thought while John Newhook, my guide, and I sat and studied the third massiveantlered caribou we had stalked in two days of September last year.

A WASH OF RED had stained the eastern horizon, but the rest of the sky was still dark, though sprinkled with glittering stars. That flaming sky meant foul weather ahead, but no matter. This was the witching hour for a salt-water fly fisherman, and I'd seen something that had triggered a burst of adrenaline through my body.

BERNARD HOLDEN
IT WAS LATE OCTOBER, and the view from where I stood on the old logging road was one to warm a deer-hunter’s heart. Below me, a maze of green spruce stretched eastward to the mirror surface of Allagash Lake. Beyond the lake a ridge, covered with colored hardwood trees, rose gently, dropping off again into a sea of evergreens.

No ONE WILL ever know how many rounds of ammunition are used every year by squirrel hunters, but the number must be astronomical. Next to cottontail rabbits, squirrels are the most popular game in the United States, and no wonder. Squirrels are found over large sections of the country, their meat is delicious, and hunting them requires more than a little skill and patience.

A gentle shower of wet snow or a soft rain quiets man noise in the woods, and because of the moist air and lack of wind during such a storm, a man’s scent is not carried far afield. This may be part of the reason that, over the past 26 years, I’ve been lucky enough to kill more deer on wet days than on dry or windy days.

One meat that’s a favorite among campers is ham. It can be carried conveniently just as you buy it from the store. Some hams, however, require refrigeration to keep them fresh. Ham cooked over a campfire is always a special treat. Ham and eggs is widely recognized as a sumptuous breakfast, and it is even better prepared over a campfire.

WHEN OPENING DAY rolls around this year, it’s a lead-pipe cinch that thousands of dogs will give out before the hunt is well under way. And the following morning, others will be too stiff and sore-footed to even get started. The same can probably be said for many of the men who put down unconditioned dogs.
