Never Say Moo to A Moose...or Elk
Moose, elk, cows were happy until people showed up, made trouble

WHEN HAROLD NEWTON of Northfield, Massachusetts, checked his cattle last September, he found his herd increased by one bull moose. Newton has nothing against moose, but in Massachusetts they’re a novelty. Swarms of people, attracted by the moose, roamed the farm, and milk production dropped sharply.

DON CORY of Philadelphia had come a long way for a week’s fishing with me in some of New England’s top trout waters. These are usually cold, fast rivers with deep, quiet pools, shelving riffles, and whitewater rapids. In them still live some pretty fair trout, and over them still occur some great fly hatches.

YEARS AGO campers cooked over open fires simply because there was no other way. Today open-fire cooking is the exception. We have swapped the romance of the open fire for the convenience of the camp stove. There are several other reasons for this switch.

Some truly great sport and good eating are provided by the lowly little bluegill that hangs out in almost any fresh-water pond, lake, or stream. And fortunately these little fish are easy to catch. One of the best ways to serve these small fish is in a baked-bluegill loaf.

HOW WOULD YOUR boat behave if it capsized, filled with water, or was badly holed? How would you act ? The possibility of such mishaps may seem rather remote, but we can’t disregard the statistics. Boats under 25 ft. in length are involved in about 75 percent of all boating accidents.

RECENTLY, my husband was lucky enough to get hold of a huge Maine lobster of 10 to 12 lb. “What a chowder he’ll make!” George said. And it did. Though delicious, large lobsters are a bit too tough to boil or broil and eat directly out of the shell.

THE TIME was just after dawn on a late April morning; the place was the headwaters of Rockcastle River in Kentucky’s Cumberland Mountains. I was beginning my third day in search of the spring white bass runs. My luck had been bad. I was wondering why that day should prove any more productive than the previous two.

WITH EACH STEP, my feet bogged deeper into the soft bottom muck of one of the vast tidal flats near the southern end of San Francisco Bay. I gripped my fly rod tightly as my eyes focused on some distinctive white flashes in the water. It was a school of feeding striped bass, wallowing teasingly just a few yards away.

GOOD FISHING, like most good things, is where you find it. In spite of man’s every trick and most-fervent wishes, good fishing is not usually a static thing. It may blossom in a lake or stretch of stream one year and be gone the next—today here, tomorrow there.

Shortly after those magic words, “Ice is out!” flash down from the north sometime in April, I want to be sitting in a canoe on New Brunswick’s Main Southwest Miramichi River, casting for spring salmon. These are Atlantic salmon that came upriver to spawn last fall and have spent the winter under the ice.

Most fishermen today tend to flock to the bestknown and most heavily stocked trout waters in their localities. While they stand elbow-to-elbow, competing for fresh-planted hatchery trout, other nearby waters go virtually unfished. These are the small, neglected brooks that meander through meadow and woodlot and are often the last stronghold of native trout.

I want to make an April pilgrimage to Kentucky for bass, bluegills and big crappies. I know of no better place for an early fishing trip, and I’ll save my trout fishing for later on in my home state of Michigan. The hottest place in Kentucky for bass this spring will be Lake Barkley, the big new impoundment with 45,000 surface acres and 1,400 miles of ragged shoreline in that one state.

Most fishing rods are the least complicated items of your tackle, but they can be major problems if you don’t treat them with respect. An important factor is alignment of line guides. If your guides aren’t straight, you get line drag and weakening wear with every cast.

To fish mountain lakes early in the season, you’ll probably have to hike in. Even if there’s a road, it may be muddy, icy, or in other ways too hazardous for anything but a four-wheel-drive vehicle. To save yourself the bother of carrying both spinning and fly rods, fit spinning guides onto an eight-foot stiffaction glass rod, and simply stick a fly reel and a spinning reel into your fishing jacket. Lures, of course, take up little room.

Practice on ground targets is the only way to become accurate in varmint hunting. The usual placement of a target on a bale is too high to simulate hunting shots. A good way to get small-game hunting practice is to use a discarded milk carton about half full of sand, to keep it from tipping over when hit by an arrow.

Safe Way to Anchor a Canoe
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
J. A. Emmett
Here’s a safe way for stream and river anglers to anchor canoes or any other narrow, sharp-bowed craft. The method was suggested by Paul Edman, who guides canoe parties on Maine’s Allagash River. Take a piece of line long enough to reach from the canoe’s stemhead or bow-tip to the forward thwart, and then secure the line to the thwart.
