Last November, on Idaho’s Lake Pend Oreille, Mrs. Robert Wickman thought she had snagged a log after 30 minutes of trolling. When she was gradually able to take in some line, however, she realized something was wrong. Mrs. Wickman continued to reel in all 75 yd. of line and discovered a 26½-lb.

THE FIRST weekend of last spring, the weather warmed enough to permit comfortable fishing on the Connecticut shore of Long Island Sound. The surf fishing was as rewarding as it was pleasant. There were plenty of winter flounders and tomcod around that seemed famished for such goodies as sea-worms, clams, periwinkles, mussels, and squids.

KOKANEE KEEP THINGS JUMPING

WILLIAM CURTIS
THE LAUNCHING ramp at Pardee Reservoir had long since disappeared around a bend of the lake’s arm behind us, and our rod tips were jiggling without interruption. “Doesn’t look as if we’re going to have to beat off the kokanees with an oar,” observed Dave Kalfsbeek.

On a recent moose hunt in Quebec, Canada, I learned a few new tricks about making partridge delicious. Bruce Bailey, a congenial representative of the Provincial Department of Tourism, Fish and Game, came up with a couple of them. His perdrix au chou (pronounced perdree-o-shoe) was a bush specialty.

G. Howard Gillelan
IF RALPH NADER, the safety-minded chap, should decide to look at safety in the archery business, he would find little to complain about. Bows and arrows usually are perfectly safe when they come off the production line. That is not to say there are no archery accidents, but mishaps aren’t usually the fault of the equipment.

IN THE SUMMER OF 1957, the year we came to our present place on the Atnarko River above Lonesome Lake, my wife Trudy went down to the garden one morning to get vegetables for lunch. She came back worried, and mad as a hornet. She had surprised a sow grizzly and two young cubs that were tearing the garden apart.

HOPE THE ANCHORS hold in this gale,” I muttered to myself as my boat bobbed in a windswept bay on one of the many lakes bestowed by the last ice age upon northeastern Indiana. It was March, and things were just as winter had left them. Patches of dirty snow lingered on the shore, and icy water lapped against a fringe of tattered cattails.

RICHARD J. GOSS
WITH SO MANY deer hunters devoting so much time, energy, and expense to bringing home record-breaking sets of antlers, it’s amazing how little we know about these curious status symbols that bucks grow each year. I’m a professor of biology at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, and that’s one reason I have spent the last half-dozen years doing research on the physiology of antler development.

I GLANCED QUICKLY at the frame counter on my camera and was astonished to find that I’d almost finished my third roll of film for the afternoon. And it was color film, not the comparatively inexpensive black and white. Still the wild orgy continued as one grasshopper after another thrashed the water desperately in a futile effort to escape the demanding current and the uncompromising jaws of a big brown trout that was collecting his dinner.

CLANCY SUDDENLY had started talking. For a half hour, he had perched on the limb where we’d placed him, looking disconsolate and sullen. Then a black speck appeared in the overcast sky —a single crow winging toward us. At Clancy’s raucous insistence, the single began sideslipping, lower, lower.

J. A. Emmett
BOATS AND BOYS has always been a ticklish subject for parents. From the many letters I receive from readers, however, it is evident that attitudes are changing. Youngsters have a latent interest in the water. In their minds, a boat is challenge and adventure.

Jack O'Connor
MY WIFE AND I did a 30-day hunt in Bechuanaland in the summer of 1966. We shipped plenty of rifles and ammunition, but somewhere along the way the aluminum gun cases in which I had shipped our things had been looted. All the ammunition in sight was stolen along with my cleaning rod— but not the tips, patches, or solvent.

Some time back I mentioned in these columns some of the hairy experiences I had in trying to convey rifles by plane from somewhere to somewhere else. National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Sporting Goods Association, and others have been trying to encourage a logical approach to the business of carrying hunting firearms on planes with no danger to the firearm and no wear and tear on the nerves of spooky passengers.

Forrest M. Stephey
In 15 years as a northern Wisconsin guide, I’ve rigged baits for and caught hundreds of muskies, and I consider the sucker rig about the most effective bait I use. I use a dead sucker for casting and a live one for trolling. I’ve had best results casting, and I use a 5-ft., two-handed boat rod with 30-lb.-test monofilament line.
