I thought you might like to hear about the funny thing that happened to this big striped bass on the way to the Bass River Rod & Gun Club in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. It was caught last August in Cape Cod Bay by Mrs. Adrian (Pat) Blais of Chicopee, Mass., fishing from Dick Woodland’s charter boat Madame B out of Rock Harbor, Orleans.

Cabinet for All Outdoors
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
Keith C. Schuyler
My outdoors-minded family of five has accumulated a great deal of hunting, fishing, and archery equipment over the years, creating quite a storage problem. I solved the problem with the sports cabinet shown in these photographs. Measuring 70 x 70 x 16 in., the cabinet can accommodate 16 guns and eight bows, or a combination of guns, bows, and fishing rods.

LESS THAN 35 yd. away, the small buck stared at me. His typical whitetail curiosity conflicted with his wariness, and curiosity won. He didn’t know I wanted a big-antlered deer and not a forkhorn youngster. Because of my camouflage and the leafy background, he couldn’t make out whether I was part of the scenery or some odd living creature.

A BOAT SHOULD be well built, suitably powered, and properly loaded. And to insure good service, the new boat owner should choose the hull form carefully and choose the right size. Fortunately, the days of selling boats by recommending excessively high horsepower are past.

IF A LANDLUBBER invested several hundred dollars in a boat and motor and took off on a cruise without any instructions in water safety, weather forecasting, or navigation, he would be deemed foolhardy indeed. If he got back safely, he might very well swear off boating forever.

DEER HUNTING was never like this,” I said as a tree limb, complete with wet leaves, swooshed me in the face and nearly swept me off the seat in the boat’s bow. I reached back and tried to keep the branch from dragging my rods out of the boat. On the seat behind me, Dr. Neil Crow caught the limb with one hand and pulled the rod tips out of the way with the other while our boat plowed to a stop in the mass of vegetation.

THE LURE moved slowly just under the surface when, scarcely 40 ft. from the boat, a huge lake trout rolled like a porpoise just behind it. With a terrific burst of speed, the big fish shot forward, opened a cavernous mouth, and clamped down on my spoon.

If your bait is being stolen or torn when you’re fishing with salmon eggs, try using a small worm hook instead of an egg hook. A worm hook has a longer shank, and, if you’re careful, you can ease the egg over the barb, around the bend, and up the shank.

What To Do About Hard Mouth
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
David Michael Duffey
HARD MOUTH is a sin in any dog that’s expected to pick up shot game and return it to the shooter. If my mail the past few years is any indication, there are increasing numbers of sinners in the canine realm. Nearly every mail contains a couple of letters from owners whose dogs are mutilating birds they bring in.

Rowing Rigs For Canoes

J. A. Emmett
A canoe equipped with oars is a fine dual-purpose craft. It can be paddled on narrow rivers and streams and rowed on open water. Where motors are prohibited, row long distances and paddle while fishing. Few boats row better than a double-ended or a square-sterned canoe.

California no longer takes a back seat to Florida when it comes to free salt-water fishing from piers. For instance, California just added a million-dollar public pier at San Diego that juts 2,000 ft. into the ocean where it’s possible to catch such bigger fish as barracuda, bass, bonito, and even an occasional yellowtail.
