It is my understanding that a new bill, known as S. 1592, has been introduced into the U.S. Senate by Senator Thomas J. Dodd (Conn.). This bill, if passed and signed into law by the President, would have far-reaching effects on us sportsmen. As I understand it, this bill prohibits all mail-order sales of firearms to individuals and permits such sales only between licensed importers, manufacturers, and dealers.

ONE STORMY evening in July, I was standing on a ledge at Beavertail Point, Rhode Island, looking for signs of striped bass when, at the outer edge of an underwater gully 150 ft. to my left, a school of silversides belched into the air. Panic-stricken, these finger-long baitfish fled in all directions.

NEW: A Big Lift for Salmon
Hundreds of miles of now-barren streams can be made accessible to salmon, thanks to this brand-new concept in fish ladders

JIM REARDEN
IN 1958, THE Gretchen Creek fish ladder on Afognak Island, Alaska, washed out just before a run of sockeye salmon was expected, a return from a planting of eyed salmon eggs four years earlier. Replacement of the ladder before the fish were due was impossible.

G. Howard Gillelan
JULY SEEMS like an odd time of year for a bowhunter to start preparing for the fall deer season. Fishing, boating, and beating the heat seem more appropriate. But, for hunters who know what it takes to arrow a deer, midsummer is none too early to start getting in shape.

ALAIN WOOD PRINCE
I was perched on a narrow rock ledge, inches from where tons of white water thundered down a granite-lined chute, when the big fish swam into view in the pool below. A sudden shift in the foaming surge of a back eddy had momentarily parted the curtain of bubbles and for an instant had exposed the clear, green depths.

CLINTON R. HULL
THE WILDEST, most challenging, and most productive riversalmon fishing spot on the Pacific Coast, and probably in the world, is at Requa, California, where the Klamath River pours into the Pacific Ocean. It’s known as the Klamath Slot. There, in a 150-foot-wide channel between a huge rock on the north shore and an eddy-formed sandspit on the south, the river wages a seesaw battle with the ocean.

NATIVE AFRICANS who work for safari companies have an apt and often unflattering way of naming sportsmen. Almost never do they call them by their proper American or European names, as these names are as strange, meaningless, and as difficult to pronounce for them as their own names are for the sportsmen.

SOMEWHERE IN THE flat, gray mist that hung like a shroud over the dripping tangle of cabbage palms and moss-bearded water oaks, a lone duck shattered the stillness with a sharp, plaintive cry. A chill whistled down my spine. Duck or no duck, it sounded like the wildcats we’d heard screaming from the depths of Tate’s Hell the night before.

WE KNEW THAT in the lake there were bluegills the size of pie plates. They had spawned six weeks ago, and at that time we had quickly put limits on our stringers when we fished for them in the reedy shallows. But now, in late July, it was hot in northern Michigan, and we knew the fish had scattered over the lake bottom and were deep and in groups.

THE SUMMER of 1963 was the driest ever recorded in southern Vermont. By July 1, you could walk across the big, rough West River, below our house in Jamaica, in a pair of knee boots. About 25 miles away across the Green Mountains, the Mettawee, usually bank-full after every summer thunderstorm, was only a trickle between gravel bars.

Jack O'Connor
IONCE KNEW the proprietor of a hole-in-the-wall gunshop who had a bit more larceny in his heart than most of us. He sold some new guns and some ammunition and did a little simple gunsmithing. For the most part, though, he made his coffee and frijoles by buying and selling secondhand guns.

JACK O'CONNOR
Ever since the finish of World War II, Swedish Husqvarna rifles have been well known in the United States. They are imported by Tradewinds, Tacoma, Wash., and sell widely. How ever, until a Swedish correspondent called my attention to it, I had never known that Husqvarna also made double-barreled shotguns, both box locks and side locks.

THE TREND to bigger and faster boats is encouraging more and more boatmen to venture out onto larger bodies of water. Unfortunately, some of them get lost because they don’t know piloting, which basically is a knowledge of how to get to a distant point on the water and how to get back to your point of departure despite weather (chiefly fog) conditions.

G. B. Golby
SOME small emergency may arise during almost any camping trip. It may be no more than a screw-top bottle or jar you can’t open, but it can be mighty frustrating. If a screw-top container is stubborn because of sticky contents dried in the threads, put the jar or can upside down in a pan of warm water for a few moments.

IN THE realm of dogs, hunting dogs in particular, we've probed into just about everything regarding physical and mental makeup, filling pages with scientific and pseudoscientific facts and nonsense. But no one has yet come up with much that is really conclusive about the one factor that decides whether a dog will be praised or cussed for his field work.

TEX FAWCETT
If your dogs spend most of the day in kennel runs or pens, be sure that there's adequate shade present at all times. If trees do not provide enough natural shade, cover a portion of the runs with canvas, plastic or even bur lap bags. To help keep a flat-roofed doghouse cool, place folded burlap-or similar material-over the top.

It may surprise you to learn that West Virginia in recent years has become known as a muskellunge hotspot. Muskies aren’t new to the Mountain State, but the fishing for them seems to get better every year. These king-size members of the pike family are found throughout much of the Ohio River drainage system, but probably the top muskie addresses are the Elk River, Middle Island Creek, and the Little Kanawha River.
