Reading about the albino pheasants in “What’s On Your Mind” in your July issue reminds me of a cock pheasant that inhabited our orchard for several years. The only reason he lived that long was because he kept grasshoppers and other insects down in number.

IT WAS shaping up into one of those dull days when we might as well have forgotten about fishing and imagined ourselves on a slow ocean cruise. Hoping for dolphin or king-fish, our party of four had been trolling the Gulf Stream for nearly five hours without a single strike, and as all deep-sea fishermen know, trolling without luck can become tiresome.

Rampart Dam: A Wildlife Catastrophe for Nothing?
If nuclear power will supply the same energy, why destroy moose, bear, salmon, and 1,500,000 ducks?
Ben East Story a “Best”

G. HOWARD GILLELAN
IF YOU SHOULD mention the proposed Rampart Dam to an Alaskan, you most likely would get either a tundra-cool stare or the kind of smile that anticipates a flood of millions of dollars. If the resident was a conservationist, a person who lives on the Yukon Flats, or a hunter or fisherman, he would probably tell you the project would be a catastrophe.

LOOK AT THOSE WOLF TRACKS!" Louis yelled over his shoulder, and he swerved our motorized sled so I could see. He pointed down at the caribou trail we were following. Clinging behind him with my face burrowed in the back of his caribou parka, I peeked at the tracks.

PAUL HELSER
THE 1963 DEER SEASON in Ohio ran for only two days, Thursday and Friday, December 12 and 13, and the regulations limited hunting from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. We didn’t find the track of the big buck until shortly after noon on Thursday. That meant we had just 12 hours to find and kill him.

He’s surely no trophy, but this odd little fish causes havoc every January in Idaho and Utah
[no value]

JIM ZUMBO
JANUARY FINDS many fishermen dreaming nostalgically of last season or impatiently waiting for spring. January is certainly no time to go after a coldblooded fish, unless you happen to live near the Utah-Idaho border, where a strange little fish makes its appearance only during the first month of the year.

NELSON BRYANT
TO ANYONE who was born and raised along the New England coast, as I was, duck hunting is foul weather. Duck hunting is a dark November day with the cattails and grasses bending low in the marshes under seething rain and a northeast gale. Duck hunting is water streaming down your face as you search the gray skies for storm-driven waterfowl winging low under tattered clouds.

JACK O’CONNOR
THE BIG, BLACK Cape buffalo may or may not be the world’s most dangerous game animal, but a great many people would nominate him for the honor. Unlike the leopard, lion, or tiger, he will not enter a native’s hut or a hunter’s tent, drag out the human victim, kill him, and devour him.

THE STOCK of the hunting rifle should be so designed that it enables the shooter to mount and align his rifle quickly and to hold it steadily. The buttstock should be short enough so it doesn’t catch on clothing as the hunter mounts it, and it should be long enough so he can shoot it without getting bumped on the nose by his thumb.

The Ruger 10/22, a new Ruger .22 automatic rifle with a unique rotary 10-shot magazine, is a companion piece to the Ruger .44 Magnum big-game rifle, and the man who has the .44 and the .22 will have a matched pair. All the Ruger products are cleverly designed for speedy manufacture and employ new processes such as investment castings, but they all look solid, not cheap and tinny.

Bowsights for Bowmen

G. Howard Gillelan
A COUPLE of years ago, in this department, I made what I thought was a perfectly safe statement. Referring to something I thought was impossible, I wrote that it was “about as likely as finding a telescopic sight on a bow.” A few months after I wrote that, someone introduced a scope sight for archers.

How to Net A Fish

Wynn Davis
RECENTLY, while fishing Lake Timagami in Ontario, I saw an experienced guide lose a trophy fish for the fisherman he was serving. The angler was trolling about 50 ft. from my boat, and I saw the whole painful thing. There was no doubt about it, the guide lost that prize simply because he didn’t know how to net a fish.

Boat Owners Sound Off
Fitting Laminated Ribs
[no value]
[no value]
J. A. Emmett
BOAT OWNERS, notably fishermen and canoeists, are highly critical of the equipment they use. Compared with ordinary boatmen, these outdoorsmen use their rigs more seriously, their season is longer, and the service is harsher. Accordingly, any fault in a boat, motor, trailer, or accessory is more likely to show up, and the consequences of such a failure could be more serious.

Clean, wash, and dry fish. Remove fins, heads, tails. Brush inside of fish with lemon juice; sprinkle salt and pepper on outside. Wrap each fish with one or two slices of bacon and hold with toothpicks to keep in place. Put fish in well-greased wire grill (or greased pan) and cook until bacon on one side is crisp. Then turn and cook on other side until bacon is crisp (about 10 minutes on a side), or flesh flakes easily. Serves 4 to 6.

Weaver Variable for .22's

[no value]
[no value]
The W. R. Weaver Company has revived the ⅞ in. (22 mm.) tube once very popular for hunting scope sights on the V-22, a new variable power scope for .22 rifles. Continuous power change from 3 to 6X is obtained by rotating the eyepiece. Eye-relief is about 2 in., much shorter than that on the K models.

THE BLACK DOG sat motionless beside the quiet man in rubber knee boots, white jacket, and wide-brimmed hat. Only a muscle tremor betrayed the dog’s excitement. In rapid sequence, a shot rang out, and a bird fell and splashed far out into the water straight ahead.

J. O’C.
John Nosler, maker of the famous partition-jacket Nosler bullets, has just announced a new one, a 165-gr. .30 caliber. It should be an excellent one in the .30/06, .300 H. & H., .300 Weather-by, .308 Norma, and .300 Winchester Magnum, particularly for the larger animals of the elk-caribou-moose class.
