Some years ago I read about a man poisoned by rattlesnake venom when no snake was around. It seems that a rattler once struck his boot, but the fang didn’t reach his leg. At a later date, he was scratched by an object that proved to be the snake fang, which had apparently broken off and lodged in his boot.

MANY OF YOU write to ask me questions about camping, and I always do my best to answer. The only thing that may hold up a reply is that I might be off on a camping trip. Of course, nobody ever learns all the answers about camping, but that's partly what makes camping and writing about it so interesting.

I BELIEVE I own the largest set of locked mule-deer antlers in the world (see photo). They represent the tragic end of a battle that took place some 35 years ago in the lava country east of Bend, Oregon. Several years back, I bought the set from the people who actually found the animals’ carcasses shortly after these two great bucks had died.

THE Rock 'n Roll, Charlie Schroeder's fast, 27-ft. cruiser, eased along at low throttle with heavy swells spraying her bow as she prowed into Long Island Sound through the mouth of the harbor at Clinton, Conn. Accompanied by Herb Thiem, a seasoned angler, Charlie and I were embarking on a bluefishing trip to Long Sand Shoal, a 15-minute run.

THE TRAPPER braked his jeep to a stop. Just ahead, a heavy steel gate blocked the logging road we were following through forested country on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington. The land beyond belonged to one of the big West Coast timber companies, and the gate was there to keep out trespassers.

THEY'RE here!" Ed Lukens shouted. He was dancing up and down on top of a big boulder, a grin a foot wide on his face. I could see his rod bent around in a tight arc and the taut line knifing through the current. “So our gamble has paid off,” I thought to myself as I scrambled toward Ed with a net.

A FEW SUMMERS AGO, a friend showed me once and for all how easy it is to catch trout in a mountain lake. And on a nymph, of all things. I had thought—as have many other anglers who haven't actually tried it—that only veteran experts catch trout on nymphs.

MAYBE YOU think a man's a bit of an oddball to hunt wild boars in the company of cowboys and a bulldog, but you'll not think it's so unusual when I tell you we were hunting a new kind of wild boar. The Texas Shorthorn boar, as it's called in south Texas, is expanding its range from a toe-hold into a pretty big chunk of country.

NO SIGHT is so painful to the spin-caster or the bass-bug addict as a big river, known to be full of bass, when it's high and muddy. Such conditions are impossible for good fishing—or so I thought years ago before I met Pop Boyer. Pop was the village blacksmith at Fairfax, Virginia, where I used to live.

I HAVE, a key chain that I'm proud of. It has an empty case from a .357 Magnum handgun on one end and a two-inch claw from the front foot of a black bear on the other. My hunting partner, Roger Hoskins, has one like it. We acquired the ornaments one day last winter—under circumstances neither of us will ever forget.

THE LAKE wasn't large or in the least attractive. So far as we knew, it didn't even have a name. With one end of a barbed-wire fence running into it until the posts were completely submerged, it looked more like a flooded cow pasture than a fishing lake.

THE LITTLE valley had been swarming with quail when the season opened, and it had contained a surprising number of pheasants too. But that had been almost a month before. I didn't expect shooting as fabulous as I had run into the first day when I had nailed three big, fat cock pheasants in addition to a limit of quail—or even hunting as good as on the second day when all the pheasants seemed to have left the country but when I had taken my 10 quail in no more than 30 minutes.

I KNEW the instant the fish struck that I had a good one. I was trolling along a weed-grown bar off Belle Isle, at the head of the Detroit River, alone in an old fiat-bottomed scow with a wheezy one-lung kicker. I'd never fished there before and didn't know just what to expect, but I was convinced it was the hangout of lunkers bigger than anybody suspected.

Landing a big fish on a pier or bridge can be quite a chore without some kind of long-handled gaff. Here's a good way to overcome the problem: attach a heavy sinker to a large, treblo hook, and tie the hook to a long, strong line. After the fish is played out, drop the hook, snag the fish, and haul it up.

PAL OF MINE who manufacturers firearms says that within 25 years only two types of rifle actions will still be in production. The Mauser-type bolt action will still be made, he says, for the accuracy nut and the handloader. The semiautomatic will be made for the average hunter who does not handload, who is not particularly interested in accuracy, and who shoots only in the hunting season.

Question : I have a double-barreled .450/400 Henry rifle (.400 Exp.) chambered for the 3¼-in. cartridge, 60 gr. cordite, 400 gr. bullet. There’s some doubt about using this load as it may damage the rifle. I have had the barrels radiographed and they are not Damascus.

G. Howard Gillelan
LESS THAN a decade ago, you'd see a sight on a hunting bow about as often as you'd spot an albino deer in the woods. There were a few around, but they were rarities. Now, though the use of sights for hunting still isn't common, such devices are being more widely accepted by bow hunters.

Boats for Rivers

J. A. Emmett
IF YOU have a choice of boating waters, don't underestimate rivers. Such waterways, especially nowadays, can make boating more interesting and fishing more productive. Compared with lakes and coastal waterways, the average river is less likely to be cluttered with boats and restrictions, and there’s a good chance that a river will lead you through country relatively unaffected by progress.

THIS is a case history, the story of a one-time blinker. And what's a blinker? It's a dog that deliberately avoids birds, even though he knows they are there. He may avoid them assiduously. Or his instincts may cause him to point, only to leave the birds once his thought processes take over and he starts making associations.

Skinning Woodchucks

C. H. Drew
An old-timer who used to salt down a barrel of woodchucks for winter meat tipped me off to a little trick that makes the skinning easier. Drive two nails into a large tree or the side of a building, and file the heads off. Then slit the skin on the hind legs of the chuck, hook the legs on the nails, and pull down on the skin as you would when dressing a rabbit.

A dog’s ears are very sensitive and great care should be taken when cleaning them. Use cotton swabs dipped in olive or mineral oil and work carefully within each ear, going no deeper than you can see. Never use water for ear cleaning; it can drain into the ear canal and cause painful irritation.

All-Year Steelhead Fishing

P. A. Parsons
Ted Vincent
Many anglers fight the high water of winter on California's coastal streams, get a few good days, then at the end of February quit steelhead fishing for another year. Yet this is just when some of the finest steelheading of the year starts. The surprising thing about this is that special all-year steelhead regulations are listed annually in a manual distributed by the California Department of Fish and Game.
