I thought you might be interested in this picture of a fox I photographed last fall. I brought him in this close after about three minutes of calling, and after I took his picture I dropped him with one shot from my 12 gauge shotgun. I’m 14 years old and a regular reader of OUTDOOR LIFE.

I SOMETIMES envy those archers living in the Northwestern states because of their proximity to some of the best big-game hunting in North America. In their own states the hunting is good, and without too much traveling time and expense they can go to British Columbia or Alaska where trophy big game is plentiful.

DAVE MECH
LARRY PRINGLE
As sportsmen become more familiar with the outdoors, they grow increasingly aware that many creatures depend on others for sustenance. Bears and bobcats, coons and coyotes, all feed on other inhabitants of the wilds. Predators will eat almost anything, but each species has its own specialized feeding “equipment,” habits, or habitat which restricts its main food supply to certain types of creatures.

I AWOKE with the odor of fresh coffee thick in the air. For a time I just lay in my tent bunk, sniffing and enjoying the murmur of the river. Then I got up and went outside. I rubbed sleep out of my eyes, breathed deeply, and looked at the river. “Never,” I said, “has the Big Hole been more beautiful.”

I WANT TO SAY something right at the beginning that has been said 1,000 times before, but I want to say it louder: don't ever leave camp or walk off a trail in wild country without a map, compass, and matches in a waterproof container. My ordeal started out as a moose hunt that promised to be about as dangerous as a game of ping-pong.

THE BEST smallmouth-bass fishing on this continent, I believe, is where it isn’t thought to be—in the big border lakes of the Superior-Quetico forests of Minnesota and Ontario. That area has a reputation for good northern pike and walleye fishing.

ON THE THIRD pass in a row, the big largemouth made a blue boil under the yellow popping bug and slapped it out of the water with his tail. My fishing partner Franklin Smith struck, and the feathered lure whisked over his head. “That bass has a bad case of dragonfly-itis," he said irritably, “but I think I’ve finally found a cure for it."

I FIRST learned of “Rainbow” Ernie Gerfen when I read a newspaper item reporting a limit catch of rainbow trout from Hicks Lake. That wouldn’t have been unusual on opening day in April—but it was late June. That made it either a miracle or a misprint, and I didn’t know which.

THERE ARE two schools of thought on the subject of shotgun fit. One, the casual American, is that anyone who is not a midget or a basketballer 6 ft. 10 in. tall can fit himself to a standard stock and that the whole subject of fit is a bit of esoterica about which no one of normal temperament should fret unduly.

When Winchester brought out the Model 70 rifle for the .264 Winchester cartridge, the new musket had a 26-in. barrel. This saddened and depressed many worthy citizens who were intrigued by the .264 cartridge and were anxious to lug a rifle chambered for it around in the hills.

An open season on sandhill cranes in several states is a strong possibility within the next two or three years. These big marsh birds were hunted almost to extermination before getting complete protection in 1918. They have staged a spectacular comeback and are now doing serious crop damage in some Midwest states and Canadian prairie provinces.

Campfires and Camp Fires

C. B. Colby
WHILE one of the pleasures of any camping trip is the campfire, perhaps the most tragic event of any camping trip is a camp fire. A camp fire, unfortunately, often starts from a campfire. The camper who knows what to do to prevent a fire, what to do if one starts despite precautions, and what to do if a fire approaches his camp from outside, will have a lot less to worry about.

There are 110,000 square miles of subarctic wilderness in Labrador, a part of the province of Newfoundland and now one of Canada’s newest frontiers for top fishing and outdoor adventure. The primitive fastnesses of western Labrador contain a myriad crystal-clear, cold waters—lakes, rivers, and streams—abounding with brook trout, arctic charr, lake trout, ouananiche, whitefish, and northern pike.

J. A. Emmett
Often you can give boots or canoe shoes a new lease on life by working a few minutes with the easily learned moccasin stitch.
