The lunker I'm holding in this picture is not a walleye. It's an 8-lb. 5-oz. sauger, 28 in. long, that I caught last October in the Missouri River about a mile above Niobrara, Nebraska. Hank Dawson, Nebraska game commission's area manager at Norfolk, officially identified the fish as a sauger, and fisheries men from the game commission tell me it sets a new world record, nosing out the former title holder by 2 oz.

STEVE KELLY and I were drift-fishing for red snappers over a reef a few miles off Florida's Daytona Beach. Using mullet strips for bait, we'd boated 15 that ran up to 6 lb., and we'd also caught a few fair-size grouper, porgies, and blue runners.

VERMONT HAS SOME of the finest trout fishing in the East, but if you were to ask me where in Vermont you could find good brook-trout fishing, I'd have to do some head scratching. I could name dozens of knee-deep streams where you could take plenty of brookies, but they would be so small that it would take a dozen of them to stink up a pan.

LEE BROTHERS, lion hunters of Arizona, have known for several years that I make my hunting trips in January and February and that I insist on going to a mild, bright climate. TROUT WERE rising along the far bank of Wyoming's Fire-hole River. I was wading in midstream, making 60-foot casts to the grassy bank. Now and then a trout would suck in the fly. Soon I came to where the river bank broke away into a cove. A tree had fallen into the water there, and at the edge of its tangled limbs, where the current washed close, I saw a good trout rising.

ALL THE DISCUSSION hinged on the fact that a pronghorn antelope must have horns that score at least 75 points to gain a place in the Boone and Crockett Club record book. Our four-man crew from Pierre, South Dakota, was headed into the north-west corner of the state on what was shaping up as a record-book safari.

FOR ALMOST any devoted angler, one life span is much too short a period in which to fish all the waters which hold some special enchantment for him. No matter how many weeks, days, or hours he may be allotted to seek the perfect fishing hole, there always seem to be distant horizons which lie just beyond his means, in money or in time.

RIGHT NOW where I want to be is in a row-boat on the little Northeast River, in Maryland, casting a top-water plug for largemouth bass. I can't think of a better kick-off for 1962 fishing. Northeast River largemouth fishing is the biggest bargain bass fishermen who live in the densely populated and hard-fished Philadelphia-Harris-burg-Washington triangle are likely to find.

WESTERNERS are a restless breed. No matter where they've fished on short trips, when they get enough time to spare they push toward the horizon. I'm no exception. Most of the fishing I've done in the past 30 years has been on well-loved waters easily reached from my home by car or a short hike.

Most efficient way to clean large fish that have leathery hides or matted scales is to skin and fillet them. This way you end up with two neat slabs of boneless meat that can be cooked at once or stored without needless bulk in a small freezer. You get rid of all useless parts—head, skin, bones, and entrails— in one easy operation.

THE NEW system of marking fly lines by weight rather than diameter makes it easy to buy a line that will match your rod. Henceforth all lines of a given weight, whether level silk lines or double-taper nylon, will be given a code number based on the weight of the forward 30 ft. of the line, which is the length of line the average fly caster has in the air when he starts a cast.

Scare articles in some newspapers have indicated that an epidemic of hepatoma—liver cancer—in hatchery rainbow-trout breeding stock threatens to ruin our trout fishing. These are the facts: Hepatoma is present in rainbow breeding stock of at least 10 percent of our trout hatcheries—federal, state, and commercial.

LAST FALL I hunted pheasants for a few days in California's Sacramento Valley. The first day, I used barrels bored Skeet No. 1 and No. 2 on a Model 21 Winchester 12 gauge. The year before at the same club I had hunted along sloughs choked with cattails.

David Michael Duffey
THEY found, they flushed, they fetched. For 2½ days the best of the nation's English springer spaniels performed the tasks spaniels are expected to do as part of their daily duties in the field. But since they were under the critical eyes of two judges and a gallery of flushing-dog fanciers, they had to do more than just a workmanlike job.

HENRY MOORE
Petty Larceny. A Fairfield hunter paid $100 to learn that altering a deer's antler is as illegal as altering a check. The warden admired the "art work" of whittling one antler of a spike horn to look like a forkhorn, but not the larcenous intent.
