Here’s a picture of a woodland tragedy that ended the life of a young whitetail buck before it had barely started. Here’s the story behind it. On last July 4 our dog barked a lot during the night, and the next day my daughter and a friend found this small buck caught in a fence nearby.

ARCHERY
Varmint Hunting

G. Howard Gillelan
TO AN INCREASING number of archers, the terms "hunting season" and "off season" are as obsolete as flint arrowheads. These bowmen hunt big game during the fall, of course, but their hunting doesn't stop then. They've discovered varmint hunting, a sport which offers legal shooting throughout the year—and generally without landowner problems.

Constructed of cellulose wadding sandwiched between two layers of a waterproof form of waxed crepe paper, the bags are roomy and comfortable despite their relatively light weight of 4 lbs.

LOTS OF salt-water fishermen catch their first false albacore by accident while casting or trolling for bluefish. It was that way with my friend Ted Allerton. “This is the hottest fishing I’ve had since I moved to the East Coast,” exclaimed Ted, formerly of Washington state, as he unhooked his fifth fly-rod-caught bluefish.

Gobbler Seasons Set

CHARLES ELLIOTT
REPORTS INDICATE that again this year a growing number of Southern shooters will take to the field during the weeks between late March and early May. The eagerly anticipated attraction is the annual spring season on wild gobblers. From time to time, gobbler hunting has been condemned by armchair conservationists who have claimed that killing off the males at mating time would eventually deplete the flocks.

ARTHUR GRAHAME
AMONG the numerous letters received from readers commenting on my articles about paid hunting in the September, October, and November, 1960, issues of OUTDOOR LIFE, is one from a Michigan woman hunter who signed herself "Mrs. G." I think her letter calls for an answer here because it reflects a widespread, and I think dangerous, misapprehension by sportsmen of two aspects of today's hunting conditions.

GO SOUTH, young man, is sound advice for anglers who want to catch big fish during 1961. Record-size fish are being caught in Dixie today in many places where such fishing never existed before. I PHONED Ed Brookshire the night before the opening of California's dove season. Ed recognized my voice before I could explain anything. He started peppering me with questions. "Have you got the doves located?" “Sure,” I said, “I saw more birds in the past three days than I’ve ever seen before.

ACROSS the wide Norwegian salmon river I saw a man twirl a line around his head, the heavy silver spoon on the end of it flashing in the sun. As it came around on about the sixth twirl, he released the line and the spoon shot out over the river. Now he shoved the bright tin can held in his other hand out after the moving line.

I WAS STANDING waist-deep in Maine's Machias River, and I knew just what to do if an Atlantic salmon hit my Gray Wulff fly dancing down the eddying current 40 feet upstream. I knew because Duncan Cameron had told me 10 months before. “The reason you’re missing them fish,” he had explained, “is because you’re striking too quick.

THE TRACK was odd, not like anything Gordon Hagen or I had seen before. It was hardly more than a furrow through the deep snow, with snow scuffed in to blur the footprints, as if some animal had crawled along on its belly. Duke, the young hound on whose judgment we were relying, trotted over to it, sniffed briefly, and turned away.

ONE OF MY favorite cartridges is a modest and ancient creation that has been kicking around for almost 70 years. It is one of the first smokeless-powder cartridges ever designed, a cartridge that has been used all over the world on everything from dik-diks to elephants, and in North America on game as diverse as javelinas and moose.

JACK O'CONNOR
Many hunters assume that the most conspicuous reticule to use in poor light is the post, but it doesn't seem to work out that way. Actually the post's only virtue I've ever discovered is that in a scope it looks much like the front sight seen through a peep sight.

J. A. Emmett
MANY READERS are writing in to ask me about inboard-outboards. "What are they like? How do they work? What do they cost?" These are the questions most often asked. Think of the inboard-outboard (inboard engine plus outboard-drive unit) as an attempt to combine the good features of the marine inboard engine and the outboard motor, while avoiding their bad points.

C. B. Colby
AMONG today's most popular pieces of camp equipment are stoves, lanterns, and iceboxes. This popularity is easy to explain, for when such gear is functioning properly it makes camping a lot pleasanter. When it's not working right, however, it can be more trouble than it's worth.

From where the famous McKenzie River flows into the Willamette River near Coburg, Oreg., the Willamette becomes big water. From this point to far below Harrisburg on U. S. Rt. 99, float trips give wet-fly fishing for large cutthroats that sometimes is sensational in early summer.
