In “Lost in a Blizzard” in OUTDOOR LIFE last October, I told how a raging snowstorm trapped three of us in a tiny tent, with the temperature 30 below, on my 1957 moose hunt on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. When bush pilot Don Johnson flew me out just ahead of another blizzard, I had to leave behind the whopping trophy rack I’d taken.

“The Eye”
EYE-CATCHING LURE — A theory long held by some expert anglers—that fish eyes make a particular delicacy to other fish—has become the basis of a new idea in lures from the Fred Arbogast Co., Inc., Akron, Ohio, and one of the most novel fish-catchers to come along this season. Ingeniously constructed to look like its name, “The Eye” works especially well on bass and pan fish, as well as trout. With a weed guard to protect it when dropped into heavy cover spots, the unique lure is now at your tackle store priced at 85¢.

HERE comes a sail. Mind your rod!” the skipper shouted to Jim Hughes who sat in the chair across the cockpit from me. “His eye’s on your bait. Don't forget to drop back when he taps it with his bill.” Jim was on his first blue-water trip. Half a day of trolling without a strike under a bright Florida sun had made him drowsy, and he was dozing when the skipper sighted the onrushing sailfish.

DON'T BE surprised some spring afternoon when you're taking a stroll through a strange forest if you come across two bowmen seemingly hunting out of season. Perhaps they'll be peering into a hollow where a whitetail buck stands in the shadows of some hardwoods.

AT ABOUT 20 minutes before midnight on Monday, August 17, 1959, an 8,000-foot mountain fell into the Madison River Canyon, in the southwest corner of Montana, seven miles downstream from Hebgen Lake. An estimated 50,000,000 tons of earth, rock, and trees roared down like a gigantic waterfall, changing the face of the land and the river forever.

OF ALL THE SUPERB trophies found on this fortunate continent of North America, I’d put the wild sheep right at the very top of the list. And of all the wild sheep, I’d give first place to old Ovis canadensis, the brown bighorn, that monarch of the crags and canyons.

I COULDN’T have a better reason for wanting to fish northern Maine’s Allagash River this spring. It’s the stand-out brook-trout river of the U.S.A., and classes with the best in Canada. The Allagash has one big drawback. It’s a long pull to get there from any place on the map.

ALMOST EVERY fresh-water angler has one lake, creek, river, or specific stretch of water he prefers over all others. His choice may be for a special reason, or combination of reasons, not necessarily premised on the poundage of fish he might have snagged out of his favorite haunt.

LESLIE E. TASSELL
I AWOKE from deep sleep with a chill sense of something wrong, and lay quiet in my berth listening. The ship’s clock chimed eight bells. Midnight. There was no other sound to disturb the stillness of the Florida night, not even the lapping of water againt the Don-Jo’s planking, no hint of trouble of any kind.

HERE’S how you hit a woodchuck that’s more than 500 yards away : We were on a dirt road beside the Columbia River in central Washington. At this point the road slopes up sharply away from the river. When we were halfway up this grade I stopped my station wagon.

Follow the Arrows for Big Bass
You don't need an airboat to fish the finest bass wilderness in Florida. All you need for lunkers are an ordinary boat and outboard—and the dope in this story

GEORGE HEINZMAN
THE HEADLIGHTS picked up a bobcat 100 yards before I reached our favorite wilderness launching point. He hesitated, looked toward the car momentarily, and then stepped into the underbrush beside the narrow sand road. I was deep in the vast St. Johns River Marsh, the finest big-bass wilderness in Florida.

I STOOD on the crest of a mountain ridge, straining my eyes and ears at the gray dawn. The last of the highland stars winked out, and soft light filtered through the forest crowns. A squirrel barked, a pair of thrushes purred in the brush, and down in the hollow, a barred owl caled contemptuously at the day.

MY ANGLING column has been in each issue of OUTDOOR LIFE for 26 years. I wrote monthly features and columns about fishing for 12 years before I became OUTDOOR LIFE’S angling editor. I am getting along in years. The time has come when I need to take a rest from the steady demands of writing to meet deadlines each month.

DON DeHART
THE first indication that our polar-bear hunt wasn't going to end up sour came shortly after noon on March 6, 1958. Our two hunters, Dr. Frank O'Neill of Oroville, California, and John Beicher of Up land, California, were restless. The days of waiting for favorable winds had also spread the "cabin fever" to the third member of our party, Chris Klineburger, taxi dermist for the Seattle, Washington, firm of Jonas Brothers.

MRS. IVAN L. MARX
I MARRIED Ivan Marx, a professional photographer and bear-hunting guide, in Alaska in 1956. Since then bears and cameras have been a big part of my life. I learned slowly about cameras; the bears came faster. Ivan’s home base is Burney, Shasta County, California, where for the past 15 years he has been a guide specializing in hunts for California black bears.

SOMETIMES a guide doesn’t have to say a word. You can tell what’s on his mind by his grin, the way his eyes pop, or the way his mouth drops. That’s how it was when Wilf Organ and I walked down the dock that evening at First Cranberry Lake. We were lugging our gear to the boat and passing it to Archie Hunt, our guide.

JACK O'CONNOR
THERE isn’t any doubt as to the identity of the No. 1 game animal of the United States. It is the deer. Likewise, there’s no doubt as to the animal most hunted, most shot at, most talked about. I don’t think, either, that there’s any doubt about the animal most hunters have in mind when they choose “big-game rifles.’’ So this little essay is going to be about deer and deer rifles, a subject that would tax the experience of a Daniel Boone and stagger the wisdom of a Solomon.

J. A. EMMETT
YOU’LL HAVE MORE boat trailers than ever before to choose from this year. The trailers shown in the accompanying photos give only a hint of the vast number of types, makes, and models that are available. At least four dozen manufacturers are now selling boat trailers more or less nation-wide.

C. B. COLBY
UNQUESTIONABLY one of the pleasantest by-products of any camping trip is the campfire. It’s the center of most camping activities after dark, and on a cold or gloomy day there’s nothing cheerier than a good, brisk fire. If you’re a confirmed campfire cook, it’s an even more important part of a trip.

HARD as it may be for us colonials to admit, apparently to come up with top-notch spaniels Americans must draw from the nation of the dogs' original development—England.
