When I went fishing here in Antarctica I got the horselaugh from some old-timers from previous expeditions who claimed there were no fish in Kainan Bay. But it was my turn to laugh when I caught some fish—about eight small ones. They were colorless in water, changed to dark blue out of water, then reverted back to the color of ice when dead.

GEORGE HEINOLD
Our small inboard dory wallowed gently in a light breeze close to swirls which marked a drop-off. I was handling the wheel while my companions, Mel and Dick, stood ready with spinning rods. It was May, a month when the blackfish of Long Island Sound bulge with roe.

For those who hate to clean fish (and who doesn’t?) this fish-scaling tip will be good news. Purchase a ½ in. coarse-thread tap (the kind used in threading pipe) at your hardware store. Next grind, or have ground, if you don’t own a grinder, the butt of the tap so that it will fit into the chuck of your electric drill.

ARTHUR GRAHAME
Deer season is half a year away but Eastern game managers and sportsmen are faced with a critical whitetail problem they ought to start solving right now. That problem is how to stop the wasteful and unspeakably cruel killing of deer by free-running dogs.

BEN EAST
One of the greatest fishing areas in the whole United States lies in the heart of the Midwest, and it’s as good as unfished. A maze of channels and pools, bayous, sloughs, backwaters and lakes, island-studded, timber-grown, from one to five miles wide, more than 700 long as a crow flies, half again that long by water, bordering or running across six of these states—that's the upper Mississippi River, from its headwaters in Minnesota almost to the mouth of the Missouri.

CHARLES ELLIOTT
This spring, there are several places where a zealous angler might catch a world-record fish. Of course, no one knows when, where, or under what circumstances a record fish will be taken, but the chances are certainly better in waters where outsize individuals have been caught with some regularity.

JOE MEARS
There were increases in fish-and-game law arrests in most Western states last year. Does this mean sportsmen are becoming less law-abiding, or is it just that wardens are taking their work more seriously? In Colorado arrests and convictions jumped 681.

What a Cliffhanger it will be if anybody gets that one.” That said, Jack O’Connor, gun editor of OUTDOOR LIFE, handed his 12 X 60 glasses back to Sam Williams, our Indian guide, and headed for his horse to join the others on the last steep mile down to our tent camp in the bleak Ruby Range of the Yukon.

TOM McNALLY
As every fisherman who has chucked flies or dunked bait in a trout stream knows, big trout like big mouthfuls. Fishing records go on to prove that wherever large trout are caught on flies, streamers are the most consistent killers. Why is this?

First I thought a cyclone had moved down through the cedar forests, singling out my No. 1 trapline cabin as the main object of its fury. Where rightly there should have been a door, now there was an ugly gap in the log wall, the crisp whiteness of the snow outside accentuating the darkness within.

The crappie is just a little panfish that takes a lure or a minnow delicately, then resists capture with the zest of an old shoe snagged from bottom. But whoever is deceived by that and thinks crappie fishing is dull, just hasn’t gone into the art of the matter.

My first close brush with an elephant was far too close for comfort. I wasn’t looking for excitement at the time. I was out for camp meat with Mohamed Bal, better known in East Africa by the nickname Bali. We wanted a plump antelope to feed our crew on the Galana River, 200 miles southeast of Nairobi, in Kenya.

Salty sweat was smarting my sun-blistered face, partly obscuring the view finder on my heavy camera, when the first great tarpon struck. From midway across a narrow, jade-green channel, between me and two tense anglers standing in an aluminum skiff on the far side, it came with slashing savagery reminiscent of the huge mako sharks which also course through these tepid back-country waters of the Florida Keys.

Anglers who approach May fishing with fixed ideas are just asking TO get skunked. Unpredictable early-season trout can change their minds from hour to hour, and a fisherman needs the same flexibility.

Question : Would you give me a dough-ball formula for carp bait?—Robert Rybacki, Pa. Answer: One of several good ones is to soak white bread in water a few seconds, then squeeze out all excess moisture. Knead the bread until you have a smooth paste, add some honey, and mix thoroughly. Cotton batting added to this mixture may make it last longer on the hook.

Charles Lennhoff
Fishermen often run miles trying to catch a few grasshoppers, when by going out into a field about 20 minutes before sunup, they could catch all they want quickly and easily. At that time the hoppers are cold and can’t move very fast; they make only one jump and then try to hide under a bush or tuft of grass.

Vacation Campgrounds, Southeastern Edition, by Charles and Kay Hultquist, is the latest handbook on the subject. First of four sectional guides to public tent camping areas in the U. S., it gives local attractions, nearest source of food and supplies, and detailed information—largely by means of symbols— as to available facilities (tent sites, parking areas, fireplaces, tables and benches, drinking water, firewood, etc.).

If you need minnows for bass bait but don’t have a seine, try dragging a bundle of weeds slowly through minnow-populated water and onto a sandbar or beach. You’ll be surprised how many small minnows will be dragged ashore. An uprooted sweet clover plant makes a fine make-shift net.

Anyone who plans to do any hunting from horseback just about has to have a saddle scabbard. Even if the hunt is to last only a day or two, a good scabbard is a wise investment. Trying to carry a rifle around on horseback without a scabbard is enough to drive one nuts.

Question : Can you shed any light on a story making the rounds that Winchester plans to bring out a .270 caliber cartridge on the .308 case?—H. G. Young, Colo. Answer: This tale has been skipping around the country for several years now. I think there is considerable demand for such a cartridge, particularly in the Model 88 lever action, but I have absolutely no information as to whether Winchester will bring it out.

One of the most interesting aspects of the current boom in water sports is the increasing popularity of boating vacations. One approach to camp sanitation is to move when the tent site gets very dirty, but it’s not the best and neither is it necessary. Even if you stay in one place for weeks, you don’t have to endure a messy tent, or garbage-strewn ground and soiled clothing, because with good management a close approach to home cleanliness is always possible.
