JACK BATTEN
I’VE FINALLY tracked down a Canadian who’s associated with the only team from Canada that’s taking part, in a professional way, in the national pastime of the United States. The pastime is of course baseball; the team is the Montreal Expos of the freshly expanded National League; and the single, lonely Canadian is a Miss Josée Larivière who is 22, five foot-four inches tall and who can throw and bat right-handed if called on.

GARY BANNERMAN
WHEN A BIG supermarket moves in to squeeze out a small grocer, it’s easy to shrug off the result as one price of free enterprise. But what’s the answer when an army colonel commanding a squad of 77 civilian clerks sets up shop to compete with a town’s established merchants?

BACK IN MARCH, 1968, the career of British Columbia’s highways minister, Philip Arthur (Flying Phil) Gaglardi, was grounded along with a government Lear jet. Premier W. A. C. Bennett demoted his flamboyant political crony to minister-without-portfolio, cut his $35,500 salary in half and asked him to decamp from a lavish suite of offices.

How one “robe” fooled all those city folk out there in radioland

SANDRA PEREDO
THE ASSIGNMENT started out as a story about a type of vanishing Canadian: the kind of true rustic whose closeness to the land can still bring forth the simple truths that most city folk have forgotten or never knew. The particular man was Fred Dobbs, a farmer in Beamsville, Ont., who last summer started phoning in to Gerussi!, the sophisticated morning radio show hosted on CBC by actor Bruno Gerussi.

MY MOVE FROM the CTV network to Maclean’s prompted a flurry of questions. Mostly they divided into two categories: what directions do you contemplate for the magazine and why move from television to print when most of the traffic has been going the other way?

PAULINE JEWETT
You’re the prime minister. You want constitutional reform—but the public and many politicians apparently couldn’t care less. How can you stir their interest? Here are some things you could do, Mr. Trudeau...
[no value]

[no value]
THE DIFFICULT THING about constitutional reform is getting any sustained public interest in it. People — both Englishand French-speaking Canadians — just can’t get terribly excited about the Senate, the monarchy, the Supreme Court, an entrenched Bill of Rights, or even the distribution of powers between Ottawa and the provinces.

THE NATURAL SUPERIORITY OF MEN
A provocative theory by a Canadian scholar suggests that women can't be "equal." Our biological heritage dictates that men form groups to run the world, and women can't join

Alexander Ross
THERE IS AN UNEASY feeling abroad that something basic is happening to the relations between men and women. In London, some of the trendier birds on King’s Road have taken to wearing fake moustaches with their miniskirts. The line that “marriage is obsolete” has become staple fare in women’s magazines and cocktail-party conversations.

MY FRIEND, RICHARD NIXON

PREMIER JOSEPH R. SMALLWOOD
RICHARD M. NIXON and I, that night in Moscow when we went looking for Nikita Khrushchov, were said later by some newspapers to have been drunk, or at any rate tipsy. Not so. Mr. Nixon is a very abstemious drinker, and I am a total abstainer. We were cold sober.

QUEBEC’S WORRIED MINORITY
[no value]
A PLACE TO STAND?
Every day, the noise of nationalism grows in the air breathed by five million French-speaking Quebeckers. Every day, one million of their non-French countrymen hear it, and wonder, and worry. Should they quit the province they call home? Can they adapt to the changing times? Maclean's reports their dilemma

FRANK HOWARD (at left) is an AngloQuebecker, a journalist and a bitter man. He has lived close to Quebec City most of his life, and covers the provincial legislature for the Toronto Globe and Mail. He is fully bilingual but, because English is his mother tongue, he no longer feels at home in Quebec.

The Mythology of a Crisis
FRENCH VS. ENGLISH?
The fallacies — and the facts

[no value]
MANY CANADIANS, French and English, base their arguments on the language question on assumptions that happen not to be true. Anglophones tend to believe, for instance, that French Canadians have made such strides since 1960 that their culture is no longer in danger and that, even if it were, not much could be done because agitation is already driving capital out of Quebec and threatens to impoverish everyone, French and English alike.

ALAN EDMONDS
If a rebel is one who refuses to blindly accept things the way they are, then the neighborhood primary school may right now be teaching your kids that rebellion is up there with cleanliness and godliness. THE TROUBLE WITH freedom is that someone has to put the garbage out. Rochdale College, Toronto, Canada . . . the eyes of the world are upon you. This, after all, is what rebellion is all about. It’s the nitty gritty of the half-heard demands of Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Jerry Rubin and the face-less computer-burners at Sir George Williams and, when you get down to it, even Eldridge Cleaver.

WHO NEEDS THE COVER-UP FAD?
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
MARJORIE HARRIS
The big fashion push for the beaches of ’69 are those boring little cover-up dresses; you know, the ones that don’t do much except disguise a thick waist or a bulgy bottom. The suits shown here, you might say, are outside fashion: they’re strictly for shapely women and they’re constructed to enhance a lovely body.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MEDICINE
Are you the kind of patient who drives doctors to an early grave?
[no value]
[no value]
SIDNEY KATZ
WAS THERE EVER a time when so many unkind things were being said about the family doctor? I doubt it. In the headlines and the letters columns of our newspapers, he's under attack — for not making house calls, for not responding to “emergencies,” for rushing through appointments.

YOU & YOUR MONEY
Why not invest in your OWN home?
[no value]
[no value]
[no value]
SMALL AND MEDIUM investors have usually had to watch in frustration while big-money operators earn rich returns from lending money on mortgages. Yields of nine percent or more were tempting. But there was no good way of organizing money from many smaller investors to provide funds for housing and other building.

THE CONTEST

The absurdities of English, abounding as it does with monstrous spellings bearing little consistent relationship to pronunciations, have amused and vexed many a scholar. None more than George Bernard Shaw. Shaw’s most famous jibe at the language he used so well was his contrivance of the word ghoti.

PHILIP SYKES
BY A SMALL and unremembered act of the Canada Council, some unmeasurable fragment of my income tax contributed to the publication of Technology and Empire. I approve this transaction of the Ottawa establishment. It should direct more of my tax money to supporting assaults on its liberal assumptions; to promoting anguished questions about the purpose of our life on this continent.

Those Air of Death hearings have left an after-smog that could stifle even the boldest television producers

DOUGLAS MARSHALL
WHAT HAS HAPPENED to Air of Death, the CBC’s controversial program on air pollution, since it was broadcast for the first and last time on Oct. 22, 1967, shouldn’t happen to a sleazy 8-mm underground movie. It’s a pity the people of Canada haven’t had a chance to see a repeat performance.

Jules "Mercouri” Dassin is back in Hollywood and still serving up those tired old Marxist clichés

LARRY ZOLF
THE 20-YEAR ODYSSEY of Julius Dashinsky has run full circle. Who is Julius Dashinsky? None other than Jules Dassin, one of the teeming, huddled Marxist masses driven from their Beverly Hills swimming pools by the Hollywood investigations of the House Un-American Activities Committee 1947-54, and best known, perhaps, as Mr. Melina Mercouri.

THE LIVELY ARTS
Those erotic antics in the theatre are really just insufferably dull sermons for the New Morality
[no value]
[no value]
MAVOR MOORE
THE ARTS AND LETTERS seem to be in a race these days to get our private parts out into the open. This is often attributed to voyeurism resulting from post-puritan letdown. A character in a current novel or film will flaunt “the distinguishing marks of his sex at her” as boldly as the bishop in the celebrated limerick.
