IN THE MIDDLE of a recent court hearing a Toronto magistrate made the astonishing discovery that it’s illegal for an Ontario property owner to sell his own property unless he’s a registered real-estate broker or salesman. Under the Real Estate and Business Broker’s Act, passed by the Provincial Legislature in 1946, it is clearly set forth that the ordinary resident of Ontario who wants to dispose of his house, his farm or his lot must hire an agent or risk six months in jail and a fine of $1,000.

WHILE thousands of sight-seers were being ushered through a glittering, doubletiered “Train of Tomorrow” at the Canadian National Exhibition, Canadian newspapers were clearing their front pages for the story of a disaster in which 31 passengers were crushed or burned to death in the wreckage of a CNR excursion train near Dugald, Man.

THOSE who are dismayed at the Russians’ odd behavior in these days can find some comfort in Harold Nicolson’s book, “The Congress of Vienna.” In 1814, as now, Russia was one of a Big Four who had beaten the would-be Dictator of Europe. Russia, says Nicolson, assumed “an attitude of arrogant secretiveness which caused dismay to her partners . . .

TO VETERAN readers of our veteran feature, Parade, the last issue of Maclean’s must have been like a breath of a richer, and somehow simpler, past. There was that joke again: “In Halifax, one hot afternoon, a Mrs. Fellows left on her honeymoon wearing, according to the press, nothing more than a yellow straw hat, brown accessories, and a corsage of snapdragons and cornflowers.”

AT THE consulate reception desk the lineup was as long as the room was wide. LAST FALL, three members of a Canadian National section crew, repairing track east, of Vanderhoof, B.C., were badly scared when a massive black bull moose stepped angrily out of the bush less than a hundred yards away from them, and, with ears laid back, began to paw at the ground and chant out his high to low fighting call.

IF ATOMIC WAR COMES ...
There IS a defense against the Bomb, claims this writer, and it's time we did something about it

WALLACE GOFORTH
IF YOU are among the 27% of Canadians who live in cities of over 50,000 people, or in smaller but equally vital atomic targets, then these words are written especially for you. But even if you are fortunate enough to be living on the farm, or in an ordinary small town or village, they will greatly concern your future, even though they do not directly affect the safety of your life.

EVER SINCE he was a small boy, when he made enemies of his parents’ friends by drawing them as they played bridge, Geoffrey Davien’s main interest has been caricature in varying mediums. He has caricatured in ink, in color and in oils. His latest and most successful medium, the sculptoon, is shown in the examples on these pages.

ONE MORNING in 1938 during a Hitler crisis period I phoned a friend of mine and suggested lunch. “No,” he said, “I have read all the morning newspapers and have decided to stay in bed and wait peacefully for the end.” I must say that when 8 o’clock came this morning I would have felt in much the same mood, for one hour’s sleep is not enough even in these austere times of shortages.

IN THE year 1931, after four years as a Communist. Party worker in Manitoba, Western Ontario and Alberta, I attended the International Lenin University in Moscow as one of 20 students from Canada. Each year 6,000 fledgling party leaders from nearly every part of the five settled continents were brought to the big grey stone building at Vorovsky No. 25, 15 minutes’ walk from the Kremlin, to spend nine months absorbing party dogma and learning how to convert dogma into action after they had returned home.

HOW many times do I have to tell you?” Cy Hecate demanded. “You know we want Rachel to talk only English. PARADE
- HELP! POLICE! FRONT BOY!

WHEN two Ottawa policemen discovered an elderly gentleman whose car had stalled in midtraffic they politely offered to help. At the driver’s request they rolled the car into the driveway of a nearhy hotel. Mopping their perspiring brows they turned to ask if they could be of further service—to find the man had vanished.
