Who's Getting Those New Houses?

AT FIRST glance the Canadian record of new homes built in 1946 looks extremely good. Target for the year was 60,000, and the total of houses actually built was almost precisely that figure. Moreover, some 40,000 uncompleted homes will be finished in the spring, giving us a good start toward the 1947 target of 80,000.

ONE of the strong arguments for a lower wall against immigration has been Canada’s need for skilled people. We want more scientists, more doctors, more technicians, more educated and original minds. Now the government has taken a bar or two off the gate—to what effect?

Canada—An Act of Faith

WE HAD long suspected that Canadian history was dull only because Canadian historians were mealy - mouthed. A. R. M. Lower’s book, “Colony to Nation,” confirms this suspicion. It is absorbing, and highly irreverent. General Wolfe, to Dr. Lower, was “a very lucky man” who “blundered into success” at Quebec.

LOOKING over the table of contents for this issue, we were struck again by the ancient truth that many of the best magazine stories don’t start out as stories at all. Their genesis is not in the field of letters, but in the field of living. For instance, Harold L. Ickes lived a large slice of the ominous drama called “Lewis vs. The People” long before there was any thought that he’d be reviewing it for the readers of Maclean’s.

WHO DOES the annoying in your household? That’s easy. Of course it’s the children who annoy the parents. Don’t they practically refuse to go to sleep nights when mama and papa want to go out? Don’t they get into things they’re not supposed to touch—loose powder, jam bottles, knick-knacks on the whatnot?

JOHN CLARE
IF YOU want to get a good look at the worldwide operations of the Massey-Harris Co. the best place to stand is on the loading platform of one of its big farm machine plants in Canada or the United States. The new two-million-dollar combine assembly factory in Toronto is laid out for efficiency with little thought for symbolism.

I AM writing this letter in a house by a frozen lake. It has been snowing all day and there is every indication that it is going to snow all night. The whole scene is like the Christmas cards in Britain which loyally sustain the legend, propagated by Dickens and others, that in the winter it is Britain which has the right to be called “The Lady of the Snows.”

JANET SHEPHERD stood on the front steps of the shabby farmhouse, pulling white cotton gloves over her work-roughened hands while she tried to stifle a ridiculous feeling of guilt. It was pleasantly cool on the veranda this June morning but in the field by the driveway the young cabbages that Herb and Marty had planted yesterday were wilted flat on the ground.

The Princess and The Sailor
Close-up of a royal romance that has the whole world talking

[no value]
JOHN O. COTTON
A PART FROM the politicians (they are, very wisely, saying nothing) everyone in England who has given the matter thought is now convinced that Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor is going to marry her kinsman, Prince Philip of Greece. A lot of these crystal-gazers further see that the official announcement will be made when the Royal Family returns from their current tour of South Africa this spring, that it would be a good match because the pair seem clearly to be in love, that Princess Elizabeth would be making a good choice in this handsome sailor who speaks little or no Greek and who, anyway, will shortly become a naturalized British subject; and finally that the pair would make a very decorative and welcome addition to the somewhat thin ranks of London’s High Society.

You’re looking down into the fantastic never-never land of Headless Valley. There, between the Mackenzie Mountains and the Selwyn Range, lies the 200-mile-long twisted river system of the South Nahanni, the supposed haunt of head-hunters and of gigantic prehistoric mastodons, and the actual spawning ground of stupendous myths.

JOSEPH D. WASSERSUG
THE OLD family doctor, who closely examined each patient’s tongue, was a shrewder clinician than many of his laboratory-trained successors imagined him to be. With no X-rays to guide him and very few laboratory tests at his disposal, he learned to recognize, almost at a glance, scarlet fever, dysentery, and typhoid fever.

Handy Oracle—Intuition is the inner voice that tells a woman she is right when she isn’t.—Calgary Herald. We’d Work At It, Too—It’s natural for us mellowing folks to look back and wish we had our wickedness to live over.—Brandon Daily Sun. Comfort for Pessimists—Talk about another war won’t bring a new one.

Fussy—The hired girl had been sent down to the brook to fetch a pail of water, but stood gazing at the flowing stream apparently lost in thought. “What’s she waiting for?” asked her mistress, who was watching. “Dunno,” wearily replied her husband.

Alcoholic’s Daughter I have read “I’m an Alcoholic’s Wife,” by Janet, in your December 15 issue. I am an alcoholic’s daughter. I am one of the Susies whom Janet speaks about, who had life turned into an unforgettable hell and who is maimed permanently educationally because her university education went down her father’s throat!
