AS THE smoke of battle settles after the great reinforcement dispute, several things become clearer than they were at the time. One is that to some degree everybody was wrong. Everybody involved in the argument had some reason for anger or grievance against someone in the opposing faction.

LAST New Year’s Day we hoped for victory, this year we’re certain of it. Strange that the progress from hope to certainty hasn’t made us feel more confident of a Happy New Year in 1945. It will be, of course, when victory comes. But recent events have given us little cause for cheer.

TO WHICH we add these compelling words of an Englishman, a London businessman, who, after describing in a letter to a Canadian friend his experiences in the flying bomb blitz of last summer, continues: “When I read extracts from the American press, written by self-centred men who know nothing of the martyrdom of Europe and the vast spiritual upheavals going on there; when I read their nonsense about how England is cunningly contriving to double-cross the U. S. and how essential it is that the States organize themselves to dominate commercial markets, I want to drive into their thick heads that we have given all we had to give, suffered all we could suffer, and fought with all we could muster, not for political or commercial ends, but for something which these writers don’t seem able to comprehend.

LAST September Maclean’s published an article by Hallett Abend on China’s Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek, which exposed with a frankness, then rare, not only the difficulties but the weaknesses of the Government at Chungking. At the time the article caused some lifting of eyebrows but subsequent events have demonstrated the shrewdness of its analysis.

LIN YUTANG
THE question of civil war is on every North American’s mind whenever the question of China is brought up. Therefore I have to write about it here. Moreover it is essential to an understanding of the whole China situation. So far the public abroad has had a decidedly one-sided picture.

DEAR GWEN, I really don't know how to write this letter—it’s such a damn hard thing to do. I’d hate so much to rake up old heartaches and memories—please forgive me if I do. Bill and I grew up together, all the way from a juvenile Grade 5 at Rideau to Junior High and finally High School, and I feel terribly about his death.

WESTERN FRONT (By Cable)—At 7.30 on the morning of Sept. 1, as Lieut. - Gen. FAT IS like a black eye. It comes fast and feels awkward. Anyway it came fast and felt awkward to me. All my adult life I’d been a bantamweight, sparring around with the kids at 118. Suddenly, for no good reason at all, I was in the large economy size, complete with paunch and jowls.

THE MAN WITH A NOTEBOOK
IF EVER a man was saved by his enemies it was William Lyon Mackenzie King last month. This, of course, was nothing new for Mr. King. The Prime Minister has a formula for holding Canada together in time of crisis: it’s this, When you have to do something Quebec won’t like, take care to do it in a way that makes the rest of Canada good and mad.

THE ELECTION and shifts within the national Administration have brought to the upper levels of public life a number of new and attractive figures. In importance the first of these is, of course, the new Secretary of State, Edward R. HIS MAJESTY’S cruiser Midland had been marked off by her American refit yard as complete and ready for sea. She was a handsome job and the yard was proud of her. Looking at her now it was not easy to picture the cruiser as she had first appeared in the river nine months before: a 100-foot gash where a torpedo had found its mark and exploded magazines had nearly finished her—broken and battered and scarcely afloat.
