THE West’s J. G. Diefenbaker, telling the Commons that public esteem of Canada’s judiciary is not as high as it used to be, said, “All too frequently the idea is held that a predominant prerequisite to an appointment is not always eminence at the bar or judicial merit but political considerations”; suggested as a Number One improvement a ruling that no judge be appointed as a member of a royal commission investigating any matter that “savors in any way of a political matter.”

HE USED to be affectionately known to Cockney London as “Our ’Erb.” He went to elementary school; was errand boy, shop assistant, telephonist. He became a labor leader; in the last war was howled down as an avowed pacifist and conscientious objector; rose again to be chairman of the British Labor Party, member of the Labor Government.

Rt. Hon. Herbert Morrison
WHEN we look forward to the world after the war, what do we see? I have noticed two different and, indeed, opposite fallacies in the thinking and talking, private and public, that goes on about this all-important subject. It is worth-while considering these two fallacies because each of them in its way is extremely dangerous.

THE Mere Male generally accepts the credit for having invented the game of softball, but historical evidence reveals that The Mere Male, as usual, is talking through the top of his fedora. The next time you find it difficult to fall asleep in an upper berth, just park your bubble gum in the hammock and open your copy of Chapman’s “Homer” at Chapter Six.

WILLIAMS FORREST
IT HAD become noticeable as soon as they got off the train, this change in the atmosphere. It was early fall, and already the accents of winter had struck the air with a sharp force. The streets of Montreal hung in the balance of the seasons, with a bleak hint of cold promise touching the buildings.

ON MAY 25, 1943, nino days after the fall of Tunisia, little groups of men walked leisurely through the central square of a certain city in France. The city cannot now be named; one day its identity will be trumpeted to the world and all France will pay it homage.

KATHLEEN MOORE KNIGHT
ONE DAY in February, 1943, Dionisio Pulido, a Tarascan Indian campesino (farmer), plowing his level cornfield, saw a tiny plume of smoke wreathing up from the ground. With his bare feet he tried to stamp out the mysterious fire. Thus was born the volcano Paricutin, one of the most fantastic phenomena of modern times.

A ROUND Woodstock, Ont., they call him Petrik the Potter—a slim, rather shy man of medium build, with sensitive brown eyes, a bristling mustache and greying hair. He looks like an artist, and is. Back in 1939, when Woodstock shoppers used to see him thumbing anxiously through a HungarianEnglish dictionary as he made his purchases, he was an inconspicuous farmer who knew almost no English.

KENNETH R. WILSON
ONE OF the first things a Canadian visitor to Britain discovers is that Britain can be cold. Once you get outside a centrally heated hotel in London it is essential to pile on every woollen garment you can muster. For four days, during a tour of the “provinces,” I did not dare part from my flannel pyjamas day or night.

THE MAN WITH A NOTEBOOK
OTTAWA military authorities are considering the idea of putting Montreal “out-of-bounds” to all servicemen not actually stationed there. Reason: Montreal’s venereal disease rate, the worst in all Canada, is just about as bad as ever. “If it were any other contagious disease there’d be no doubt about it,” said one officer privately.

The article, “What Price Canada’s Ships?” merits high commendation. It is both interesting and informative. May I be permitted to point out, however, that the impression it creates that the cost of building cargo ships in Canada is 120% higher than the cost of somewhat better ships in England is not correct.

THERE is nothing better for a world that wakes up hungry than a bowl of cereal. And nothing more useful than cereals in providing variety, of taste and texture in every meal of the day. Here they are combined with other ingredients—cornflakes in cookies, rolled oats with meat, bran in flipovers, a shredded cereal and tomato merger and a fine white cereal and chocolate flavor entente.
