IN THE recent speech from the throne in Parliament the Government announced that “expenditures on development work, in preparation for the transition of industry from war to peace, will be encouraged by suitable tax modifications.” The necessity of modifying taxes on initiative and investment after the war, so that industry may expand and employment be maintained, is recognized not only by the Government, but by the James Committee on reconstruction—surely no particular friend of big business—and by Canadians generally.

IN OUR ramblings we have stumbled upon some unusual clubs and associations. There was the Baldheaded Club, an association for people named Smith, an association of people who have been cured of cancer, and one extraordinary institution known as the Something-or-other Riding and Asthma Club.

SELWYN SPEIGHT
CHANGTEH, CHINA (By Wireless)—For the first time I recently saw for myself the conditions under which the Chinese Armies in the field must live and the difficulties under which they must fight. One of an officially conducted party I visited the areas west and south of Tungting Lake through which the Japanese columns had driven to capture the city of Changteh and from which they had retreated when the Chinese counterattacked.

TURN back the pages of history 10,000 years. An elderly Egyptian is writhing in his bed— muttering imprecations under his breath at his creaking joints and the agonizing stabs that rack his limbs at every muscle twitch. He groans and calls upon his gods anew to deliver him from this strange affliction which makes his nights hideous and his days a burden almost too heavy to bear.

STRANGE patterns are emerging as the sand begins to settle in the roiled waters of Quebec politics. Ever since Confederation Quebec has been at once sheet anchor and problem child to any administration hoping to hold power. No other single factor is so important, in judging political probabilities, as the state of Quebec.

WHEN Tennyson was a very old man he went to tea with Queen Victoria at Osborne.
