RETURNING from Britain, the editor of our sister publication, Chatelaine, tells of seeing the letters S.F. on Canadian Red Cross warehouses jammed with supplies. S.F. stands for Second Front. Miss Macpherson says, “What impresses one most is that everything is READY for whatever need arises when it arises.”

FOR SOME time the editors and publishers of this magazine have been working out a way of showing in some practical manner their appreciation of the job being done for this country by the men of its armed forces overseas. Now we are happy to announce the debut on Feb. 1 of the Overseas Edition of Maclean’s which, free of cost, will be distributed among the Army and Air Force in the Mediterranean and Britain, and the Naval Services.

WE BELONGED to Ferry Command of the RAF and had flown together for several months taking bombers from America to Britain, to Morocco and Algiers, and by the southern route across Africa and down the Nile valley—and once to India. Flying Officer Norman E. (Ted) Greenaway of the RCAF was the navigator, a slender good-looking boy of 23 from Camrose, Alta.

THE Canadian public has been roused to the seriousness of the venereal disease situation. This interest is shown by increasing requests for information on the extent of the problem both in the civilian population and in the Armed Forces. Although the law requires, in common with other infectious diseases, that venereal infection be reported by physicians to health departments, it is now evident that whereas the Armed Forces Medical Services have been fulfilling these legal requirements, civilian physicians have not.

NO ART is more widely practiced than the observation of man, and yet none is studied so little and seldom is it practiced skilfully. Most people study their fellow men unconsciously. They do it simply to determine what may be gained from this one or what they may have to fear from the other.

DR. DONALD A. LAIRD
I GO to bed at 10 o’clock and get, up at 6.30,” many people tell me. Then they ask: “Am I getting enough sleep?" But it is not the number of hours in bed that tells the story, for restful sleep as well as a long night’s sleep must be considered. So when people ask if they are getting enough sleep, I reply, in oblique Scottish fashion, by asking a few questions.

BELIEVE it or not, more papooses are born in Canada in relation to population than babies of any other kind or color. THE MOST important political development in American politics during the last two months has been a widening cleavage between the armed Services and the special pressure groups on the home front. The threatened strikes of railroad and steel workers, following upon the recurrent strikes of the coal miners during 1943, brought sharp reactions from the battle fronts.
