APPLICATIONS are now being received in Ottawa for hamburger, barbecue and filling station concessions along the Alaska Highway when the war is over and the tourist business is restored. Departmental officials are perturbed over such optimism; feel that much of the ballyhoo concerning the highway’s postwar potentialities is premature and overdone.

IN AUSTRALIA the question of postwar immigration seems to be receiving considerable attention. A declining birth rate and the Commonwealth’s future problem as a Pacific power have focused discussions on (a) prospects of attracting settlers from the British Isles, and (b) possibility of modifying the White Australia policy.

WE NEVER have heard of parents who encouraged their children to get diphtheria, or smallpox, or whooping cough, or scarlet fever. But we have encountered parents with a somewhat fatalistic viewpoint—in the matter of whooping cough and scarlet fever at any rate.

ALREADY plans exist for the ereation and direction of a secret Nazi movement in a defeated Germany, says a BBC commentator. Nazi party school chiefs have been directed as to their future actions in the event of catastrophe. They are told that “even if Germany is forced to capitulate owing to military defeat, the National Socialist idea must never capitulate.

OUR FIRST experience of travel through the sky was, believe it or not, in a balloon. It was advertising a certain brand of soap, and was supposed to be a “captive” balloon. The aeronaut had sent an invitation to a newspaper with which we had launched our journalistic career to send a reporter to view the town from above.

MOST Canadians are aware, in a general way, that travel by air will become commonplace after this war—as commonplace as travel by automobile, train or ocean liner in the past. Rut only a few have, as yet, grasped the fact that their own lives will be deeply affected by this extension of everyday travel from the earth’s surface to the limitless skies.

STARTLED, two crows lifted from the cottonwood bluff, flaming yellow against the foothills, wheeled high, their wing tips black fingers against the sky. Cawing they dropped behind the lift of the twin buttes, and still cawing rose against the harsh outline of the Rockies, cool blue in the hot, still afternoon.

OUT IN the countryside of Vancouver Island, where I live, the last crops are harvested, the cordwood stacked, the young cabbages and tulip bulbs planted for the spring, and the snowdrops are sprouting. Now we have time to pause and talk. People are talking thus all over Canada, now that the winter is near—in the white fishing villages of the Maritime shore, in snug habitant farmhouses along the River, in the general stores of Ontario, around the prairie drum stoves and in the bunkhouses of British Columbia.

A SHARP reminder of the postwar problems likely to confront this province recently jolted West Coast citizens when Vancouver shipyards began to lay off men. WHAT sailors think and talk about affects the ships of the Allied nations at all times, colors their corner of the war, and, matched and duplicated in the other fighting services might profoundly affect the peace. A great deal of it may seem naive but there is a reason for that, and a good one.

Bringing the Dead to Life

How to bring the dead back to life has always been a fascinating problem. When one dies, in many cases one merely stops breathing and then loses consciousness from lack of oxygen. But the individual organs and tissues go on living for some time after this, and if breathing could be restarted quickly enough, by some artificial means, the recently dead person would wake up again, and be not so very much the worse for his experience.
