SITTING in the school classrooms of today is the generation which, in the aftermath of the most cataclysmic conflict in human history, will inherit the task of putting the world together again and making it stay put. Among them are those who, twenty or thirty years hence, will be running this nation’s affairs.

IF IT isn’t too humid for imagining, let us suppose that we are sitting out on the back porch with some of the contributors to this number of Maclean’s. You have dropped in, and, after warning you to close the screen door and not let the flies into the house, we have introduced you to our guests.

Maclean’s is excellent. Regarding the editorial, “Is Private Enterprise Getting a Last Chance?” private industry never had a chance and is not likely to have one at this late hour. There is a basic condition without which private enterprise cannot survive after reaching a certain stage of development.

THERE are public voices and even university committees who are already advocating a peace with Hitler’s followers after his violent death which every student of history expects soon—a death expected soon because most conquerors, when they began to lose battles, have been murdered or imprisoned by their own followers.

THE MAN WITH A NOTEBOOK
PRIME MINISTER King can take a lot of credit for the triumphal visit of Madame Chiang. It was his personal intervention at Washington that is said to have been the deciding factor in persuading Madame to visit Canada. Madame’s brilliant and erudite speech in the House of Commons was far above the heads of many but after talking with her at the press conference which followed, most correspondents were willing to admit that this very great person could easily have written such a speech herself.

A. W. O'BRIEN
JULY, 1943, finds Canada up to her summery ears in the biggest vacation headache of history. Practically everybody’s all dressed up but many have nowhere to go . . . and most of those with some place to go are wondering how they’ll get there. Earlier in the year there was an uneasy impression that planning an out-of-town vacation this summer would carry an unpatriotic tinge what with railway and bus lines begging people to stay at home, the current taxation strain, Victory Loan and savings obligations, and gasoline and tire rationing.

IT’S DIFFERENT this year. No packing the family into the car to go careering over the highways, no buying excursion tickets as long as your arm for a trip across the country. And no ocean cruises. No travelling just for travelling’s sake. Many folks—for the first time in their lives—are looking forward to a stay-at-home vacation.

AMERICA is becoming a nearsighted nation. Each decade more and more of the population are nearsighted. The steady movement of the population toward nearsightedness, some ophthalmic experts assert, is caused by two factors—modern living conditions, wherein man has changed from a far-looking to a nearlooking creature, and heredity.
