THIS July l is our seventy-sixth Dominion Day. On our first Dominion Day, in 1867, there were 250 people living in scattered wooden buildings known collectively as Winnipeg. There wasn’t any Calgary. In the vague Northwest there was an outpost named Edmonton House.

THE University of New Brunswick asked an old Moncton boy. Sir Frederick Williams-Taylor, for a message to be read at its Encaenia in May. In his eightieth year. Sir .Frederick, long general manager of the Bank of Montreal, still one of its directors, wrote in part these lines, read by Premier J. B. McNair:—

YOU must have seen pictures of the new Sikorsky helicopter—the odd-looking aircraft which lifts itself straight up, marks time, travels ahead, backward and sideways. An observer tells us that a pilot testing one of them was cruising along about twenty feet above a New England highway when, approaching an intersection, he noticed a traffic light change from green to red.

BRUCE HUTCHISON
THREE score and sixteen years ago our grandfathers decided to make a nation in Canada. Now, on the seventy-sixth anniversary of their decision, we perceive that their work is still incomplete. We have not finished what they began. Anybody then living could see that our grandfathers’ project was fantastic, and sensible men told them so.

LESLIE ROBERTS
MUCH discussion and disagreement go on, albeit prematurely, concerning Canada’s potential role in the realm of aviation, global and continental, in the days after the shooting has stopped. Some of the things said have been constructive.

EVA-LIS WUORIO
THERE WAS the brand-new baby, out of the hospital swaddling clothes and in his own things for the first time. The nurse held him up. The young airman standing by was red-faced with pleasure. Awkwardly but gently he reached for the baby. The nurse and the mother smiled at one another, and as they walked through the hall and out into sunlight, a woman, entering slowly and carefully, turned to look at them—and she smiled too, as the nurse turned to accompany her to the maternity ward.

FEW WHO cheer the successes of the United Nations' air forces stop to think what the swift progress in aviation will mean when peace returns. If you doubt the importance of postwar aviation to Canada, consider our geographical position; our thousands of skilled airmen; the expansion in our airplane industry; and our position as one of the great trading nations.

EVERY Sunday evening, as I have told you, I hold a political hour at the Beaver Club for Canadians in the forces in England. For half an hour I talk on world events and then there is a general discussion which often overruns the allotted time. We thought when daylight saving came and blackout was not until late that the meetings would come to a seasonable end.

TREVOR LLOYD
WE LIVE at the bottom of an ocean of air. Only recently has the meaning of this fact been realized. Many of us do not realize it yet. It’s about time we did. For the air ocean’s airplane is revolutionizing the world we live in. The plane’s conquest of time and space is giving new meaning to global geography and is radically changing the pattern of international relations.

Symphony No. 5 (Schostakovich) The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski. (Victor DM619, twelve sides.) This, to me, is the most moving of Schostakovich’s symphonies; not as slick as the First but more concentrated, by far, than the sprawling Seventh.

Day in, day out, nights, Sundays and holidays it’s on the job of preserving and conserving food, protecting the health of your family and contributing to the ease and speed of housekeeping. Of course, it’s accustomed to a full-time schedule and it’s not complaining.
