CANADA’S tourist trade from the United States has been shrinking since the war began. The decrease is such that convention and tourist associations are gravely concerned. Official Ottawa is worried. Loss of income from tourists seriously affects our trade balance.

IN CANADA and the United States young drivers, in proportion to their number, have the most automobile accidents. For example, Ontario figures show that in 1938 (the latest available) 4.1 per cent of the licensed drivers under eighteen years of age were involved in accidents, as compared with a corresponding percentage of 1.4 in the age group of sixty-five and over, and with an average rate for all age groups of 2.3.

LONDON, Jan 8 (By cable)—Last Saturday morning the newspapers of the world, and especially of Britain, were flaming with excitement over the resignation of Leslie Hore-Belisha. He had been dismissed; that was obvious. The most spectacular Minister next to Churchill had come under the Chamberlain axe True, he had been offered another and more important post.

Canada’s smartest and most spectacular battalion on the parade grounds, the Gentlemen Cadets of the Royal Military College have geared themselves The transition was as simple as that. While cities from coast to coast seethed in a turmoil as thousands of men rushed to the colors, and the General Staff at Ottawa plunged into the task of organizing, equipping and training two divisions of troops for overseas service, the Gentlemen Cadets of R.M.C. simply increased the tempo of their studies from “quick time” to the “double” and continued on their way.

LESLIE GARDEN
JUNK is big business; behind the scenes it always has been big business, but there’s nothing like a war to prove an industry’s real importance. If rags, bottles and bones, in household quantities, are of national importance, think of the values in waste from big industries, the mountains of scrap iron, rags and paper high-piled in the junk yards and warehouses of every Canadian city.

ALWAYS WE have held out stubbornly against those superficial thinkers who pretend to despise the weather as a conversational topic. More often than not, we feel, they are mere copy cats, sneering at good exciting talk about climatic conditions and their sinister or salutary influence on Granpa’s rheumatism or Sonny Boy’s chilblains, for no better reason than that they have heard other snooty pseudo-sophisticates utter similarly banal opinions.
