MACLEAN’S shares the regret of a large section of the reading public over the passing of the Canadian Magazine. The Canadian was this Dominion’s oldest magazine. It was founded in 1823, and throughout most of the 116 years of its existence it played no small part in the upbuilding of a national Canadian spirit.

TO HUNDREDS of thousands of Canadians this issue of Maclean's will possess an added appeal. Upon its front cover there appears a portrait of their Queen. Our next cover will be a companion portrait of the King, the issue being a souvenir one to commemorate the visit of Their Majesties to this Dominion.

The population of Hawaii is 396,715, and of this number 151,141 are Japanese. A substantial number of the Japanese have dual nationality; they are citizens of the United States since they were born in a territory of the United States, but they are also citizens of Japan by Japanese law since they are the children of Japanese subjects.

ROBERT D. FORSTER
IT MAY not “rain cats and dogs,” but no shadow of doubt lingers in the minds of Quebecers that it can “rain fish"—yes. torrents of them. Vast woodlands, mountains and swamps once made it decidedly difficult for Quebec’s fish hatcheries to carry out their restocking program by routine procedure, but now the use of the airplane has changed all that.

He states: The answer may be briefly revealed in the fact that the whole unemployed faction of the nation has become a separate entity, divorced from the other sections of the populace by virtue of circumstances beyond anyone’s responsibility or control.

IMAGINE a government changing its policy merely because some newspaper reader wrote a letter to the newspaper! That couldn’t happen in a country dominated by a dictator, but it could and has happened in Great Britain. In a democracy, in other words, any citizen may express himself; and if his suggestion is good enough, it may be acted upon.

In your April 1 number you printed a very fine article on “credit.” Your sources of information were very excellent, and the result produced certainly gave an insight into the routine operations in this field. It is with great regret that we notice the complete disregard of our association, the only national organization operating in Canada, as Duns-Bradstreets and Retail Credit are children of U. S. parents, and Toronto Credits is a purely local organization with affiliation with other local bureaus in other cities.

CANADA’S earliest history began in ancient Nova Scotia—first known as Acadia—for in 1497 John Cabot sailed into Cape Breton's inland sea, Bras d’Or, and landed on Cape Breton Island, where he erected the Royal Flag of Great Britain. Cabot did not remain, and no settlement was made in the province until 1604.

Next-Door Clothes—According to a fashion designer, certain clothes make some women look very bad-tempered. These are usually the ones worn by the woman next door.—Welland-Port Colborne Tribune. A Hard Job—One of the toughest jobs modern parents have is teaching their offspring good manners when the little brats hardly ever see any.—Fredericton Gleaner.

No Justice—Judge: “Have you anything to say before I pass sentence?” Burglar: "No, except that I think it's mighty unfair to have been identified by a man who kept his head under the bedclothes all the time.”—Kitchener Record. "Okeh, I'll be down in half-a-minute!" Too Successful—There was a jumble sale in the village, and one villager offered to help.
