THIS IS a brief but moving story of simple heroism; a story of suffering endured for a friend; a story of chivalry in flower. We tell it so that the names of Ralph Lepper and Bob Gole may be revered by all who strive for artistic perfection, and engraved in the memories of all Maclean's readers.

IT IS mechanically impossible for Maclean's to keep pace with the daily press, and to a great many people the following item will be old news. But for continuity of record in Maclean's itself we repeat an announcement made by The MacLean Publishing Company on September 14, prior to the opening of the Bren Gun Enquiry, before Mr. Justice H. H. Davis in Ottawa on September 19.

SOME workingmen called to see us the other evening. They wanted to know if Maclean's couldn’t do something to clean up relief abuses in the township in which they live. They cited cases of men who have been living on relief for more than four years and who openly boast that they would be suckers to work; cases of men who have declined jobs offered to them; cases of men who gamble their relief vouchers in crap games.

IN THE October 1 issue of Maclean's there was published an article entitled “Whither Our Capitalistic Civilization?” written by P. D. Ross, president of the Ottawa Journal. In that article, under the sub-caption, “Socking the Rich,” the following statement was made: “One third of the national revenue of Canada from income tax for over $10,000,000 each and every year) is collected from about 300 individuals who report incomes of $50,000 and over.

THREE Nova Scotia inshore fishermen, after toiling from daybreak to noon, landed 423 pounds of fish. The Halifax Herald prints the following report of what happened. For the catch, the fishermen were paid $3.68. From the $3.68 the fishermen had to deduct $1 for delivery to market, leaving $2.68 to pay for three men’s work, gasoline, bait, and upkeep of boat and gear.

IN THE United States, college graduates who desire a public service career are now able to gain experience in Government departments in the same way that a graduate in medicine gets experience in a hospital. Banding is unravelling some of the problems of bird migration. Millions of birds have had a numbered hard aluminum band placed upon one leg, and have then been released. The banding is painless and harmless. More than 150,000 banded birds have been found or retrapped, often thousands of miles from where they were banded.

HELEN G. CAMPBELL Director, Chatelaine Institute
THIS IS a year of good crops in Canada. Grain, by the thousands of bushels, is flowing in a steady stream to the cereal manufacturers, and thence to the kitchens of the land and the tables of Canadians. It is taking on new forms—crisp, crunchy, paper-thin flakes, puffed crackly grains, nutlike kernels, and toasted shreds separate from their fellows, or in attractive cakes or biscuits of a size for one serving.
