IN NEW BRUNSWICK this summer we crossed the Kennebecasis River on the old cable ferry which, under the command of Captain William Pitt, Second, plies between Gondola Point and the Kingston Peninsula. We had quite a chat with Captain Pitt, who was ferrying long before we were born.

GEORGE EDWARD ALLEN
IN ONE of the operating rooms of a great New York hospital there was an air of pleasurable excitement. The case was a beautiful one from the visiting students’ standpoint—a man’s leg swollen to barrel size by a rare disease of the lymphatics—and the surgeon was going to attempt an audacious operation.

FREDERICK EDWARDS
THIS WAS a brassy hot day in early August. Where the sun struck blisteringly at Midland's broad main thoroughfare, citizens in sport shirts and trousers, and little else, swabbed heavy perspiration from wet foreheads and red necks; but in Little Lake Bark, half a dozen blocks removed from King Street’s sultry glare, more than 2,000 men, women and youngsters were having a grand time of it beneath the cool shade of slender oaks and high-crested wineglass elms.

SPEAKING of horse racing, which nobody was; but bringing it up anyhow, sort of dragging it in by the scrufl of the neck, you might say, to make talk, there’s no doubt that George Popp was considered the dumbest man in town. You couldn’t equal him for thick-headedness, it seemed, let alone beat him.

THE English language is so far in the lead as a world language, states H. L. He continues: It is not only the first—and, in large part, the onlyemdash;language of both of the world's mightiest empires; it is also the second language of large and populous regions beyond their bounds.
