A WEEK or so before Anthony Eden resigned the British Foreign Secretaryship, Beverley Baxter mailed us an article on Hitler, his aims and his hates. It reported interviews with German officers who believed that inevitably there must be another “Der Tag."

ONE result of the Rowell Commission hearings is that Canadians are beginning to get a debunked inventory. Dr. E. S. Archibald, director of Dominion Experimental Farms, has testified that eighty per cent of the “so-called good agricultural land” of Western Canada is already under cultivation, and that Saskatchewan is approaching the saturation point.

ANOTHER valuable point heard by the Rowell Commission was that made by F. W. Walsh, Nova Scotia’s Director of Marketing. Mr. Walsh urged Dominion control over marketing, saying: Canada cannot compete successfully in world markets with her natural products until they are graded according to fixed standards.

TRANSPORT MINISTER HOWE informed Parliament that $14,204,883 of the people’s money has been spent in developing the Port of Churchill, on Hudson Bay. Aids to navigation, open but a few weeks in the year, have cost $4,178,506 to date. So far there is no sign of Churchill becoming a mecca for shipping; no evidence that it doesn’t represent a waste of money.

TO TORONTO’S Empire Club, Turner Catledge, of the New York Times Washington staff, told this story. The New Deal administration got its eye on the income tax returns of a little businessman. Throughout the depression, the bewildering days of the Brain Trust’s alphabetical sway, and the recession, he had kept on making a profit.

THE CEREMONY of conferring Canadian citizenship upon foreign-born peoples who fulfill its requirements and who are anxious to accept its responsibilities should be made an Occasion with a capital O. To most people who come as strangers to our tongue, the most important moment in their lives is when they are proclaimed Canadians and acquire the privilege of belonging to the British Empire.

THERE IS a Fascist movement in Canada and it is growing. Whether it is a mighty force destined to turn this Dominion from a democratic into a totalitarian state, as its impassioned leaders assert; or whether it is nothing more than an ephemeral outbreak of anti-Semitic fanaticism, blown into unmerited prominence by the mouthings of a few crackpots, as some of its critics declare, it exists.

THE startling increase in crime during the past twenty-five, and particularly during the past ten, years has not yet focused sufficient attention upon this important factor in our national life. As so much attention has been drawn to the fact that crimes committed by organized gangs or groups have been reduced in number, we have been inclined to overlook the appalling increase in the number of individual offenses.

HOW DID your house come through the winter? Did you have trouble with a smoky fireplace? Did any of your walls show dampness? Inside or out? Was your house hard to heat? Did snow, ice, wind, and rain do any damage? Spring is the time to see just what winter did to your dwelling, and during the summer it will pay you to have necessary repairs carried out so that you won’t be caught napping when another winter swoops down on you.

Roulette was invented by a monk a long time ago. The game has become very popular in France since it was legalized two years ago. There is even a fortnightly magazine devoted to theories, speculations and systems. The magazine is stuffed with advertisements of systems.

BROKEN human bones are rivetted together today in a manner unknown to surgeons even a few years ago; and the manner in which it is done is explained by The Literary Digest as follows: A steel rivetter who had just tumbled off a new skyscraper lay on the operating table with his hip broken in that ugliest of places —the socket.

Popular Mechanics
IF YOU drive your car on dirt roads, you are probably spending twice as much for operation and maintenance as you would on a hard-surfaced pavement. A survey of motoring expenses for 160 rural mail carriers in Iowa showed that it cost an average of 3.07 cents a mile to drive on dirt roads, 2.17 cents on gravel and 1.44 on pavement.

WHEN gangster films are funny— i.e., when Damon Runyon writes them—they’re about the raciest form of entertainment on the screen. Author Runyon is at his best in “A Slight Case of Murder.” The problem of the hero (Edward G. Robinson) is what to do with four corpses which he finds hanging on hooks in a closet of his rented Saratoga villa.
