NEXT MONTH the electorate of Ontario goes to the polls. Keen speculation as to the results is by no means confined to that province. Excepting William Aberhart, of Alberta,no provincial premier we can think of has received as much newspaper and conversational attention as has Mitchell F. Hepburn.

THE TRUE spirit of Canada is often and fortunately found in the small country church. The founder of this magazine, Colonel John Bayne Maclean was born in the manse of one of them—at West Puslinch, Ontario. Throughout his seventy-five years he has cherished and been inspired by the memories of the pioneers, most of them Scottish Highlanders, who settled that countryside.

Hope for the Cancer Patient
Education, declares this authority, is the most effective weapon against one of humanity's deadliest scourges

JOHN W. S. McCULLOUGH
MORTALITY FIGURES seem to indicate that cancer in Canada is on the increase. The cancer death rate for the entire country in 1921 was 75.3, per hundred thousand of population. In 1931 this rate was 92.8, and in 1935, it was 102. In all countries having reliable mortality statistics there is a somewhat similar story, making allowance for the fact that younger countries like ours have lower cancer rates than those whose population is of a higher average age.

I DON’T claim that this story casts any fresh light on the death of Nicholas Veering, the explorer, and still less that it confirms the legend of the snowman of Katayadu. I don’t know what Veering himself thought about the snowman. His expedition up Katayadu was an episode I could never induce him to discuss.

D. B. MACRAE
THERE IS much talk of people getting out of the drought areas of Southern Saskatchewan. And some reality too about the migration. Quite a number of people are getting out. Few people who live reasonably normal lives by working the land for a living have had a rougher experience than the farm and village population of this area which stretches across Saskatchewan in a belt fifty miles deep along the United States border, and extends eastward into Manitoba and westward toward Medicine Hat in Alberta.

HENRY ASHBERY
THE ENGLISH newspaper was born in 1620, but it was not until February, 1626, that the first newspaper advertisement appeared, in Mercurius Britannicus for that date. It was a bookseller’s notice. The Government, jealous of the rapidly developing press, muzzled the newspapers by the severe Printing Act in 1662, and the result was that poster advertising had the field practically to itself until the final lapsing of the Printing Act in 1695.

Perhaps your readers will be pleased if the correction is made by a French-Canadian, who lives with workers in a little industrial town of Quebec and who is on good terms with a small group of English-speaking people.
