THE BANANA can cause a lot of trouble. This statement has nothing whatever to do with casualties caused by banana skins. To be strictly fair, one must record the fact that in this regard the banana is a much maligned fruit. According to the Canada Year Book, in 1935 Canada imported 3,223,648 stems of bananas.

SUPPOSE THAT during the year 1935 no automobiles or trucks had been manufactured in Canada. More than 13,000 workmen who make cars would have been out of jobs. They would have lost $18,797,599 in wages. Suppliers of fuel and electricity would have lost $720,200.

IF YOU own a house, on a farm or in town, more likely than not it needs repairs. If not, it certainly could be modernized. If lack of cash has prevented you having the roof reshingled, the walls insulated, the plumbing and heating improved, a porch or extra bedroom added, the kitchen equipped with the built-in cupboards every housewife craves, or the basement converted from cellar to play-room, it is now possible to borrow the money on reasonable terms and, by so doing, provide comfort and convenience for yourself and work for men in the building trades who are now idle.

IN 1926, 8,116 Canadians died of tuberculosis. The death rate that year was 85.8 per 100,000 of our population. In 1935, 6,591 Canadians succumbed to the disease. The death rate last year was 60.3 per 100,000. Two factors are largely responsible for the encouraging reduction.

THE MAN lay contorted upon the bed. His knees were drawn up. his back bowed as though in pain. One arm was bent beneath him, the other flung to one side. In the silence of the room one could hear his breathing, deep and irregular. At times a slight moan seemed to escape his lips.

IN FEBRUARY of last year a small figure appeared in the eastern sky above Heidelberg, swooped round into a perfect landing, seized a suitcase and started grimly forward toward the sheds. This was Miss Briscoe. Though Julian Playfair is generously regarded as the brightest and altogether most capable of the young English biologists.

JAMES C. HENDY
I WAS IN a tea room recently and watched a gypsy fortuneteller make startling discovery of a perfect maple leaf in my teacup. “Maybe that means this is Toronto’s year to win the Stanley Cup,” remarked the girl friend. Maybe yes; maybe no. But, knowing that Connie Smythe has a very powerful hockey club, I am going to get ’way out on the end of the limb and prophesy that the Toronto Maple Leafs will not only lead the Canadian Division of the National Hockey League but will go on to win the play-offs and recover the Stanley Cup for the Queen City after its absence of four years.

KEEP HER supplied with gas, oil, water and air, bring her in for a shot of lubrication once in a while —and she'll take you as far and as fast as you want to go, if there’s a half-decent road to drive on.” That’s about all the advice a car dealer of today needs to give when he turns over to you, in exchange for anything upwards of a thousand dollars, one of our present-day motor cars.

GIBSON
DURING THE last year or two there has been much publicity in the Canadian press regarding the notorious hourglass spider, more commonly known as the Black Widow, following the finding of the species in British Columbia in 1934. In October of that year we received at Ottawa a living female specimen which was captured at Grand Forks, B.C. It was kept alive, in a large glass jar, as an object of curiosity and study for several weeks.

New Orthodox Battleships Are Bringing the German Fleet to a High Standard

THE GERMAN navy has been reborn. When Hitler scrapped the Versailles Treaty and declared for national independence, Great Britain promptly came to terms, granting an increased ratio in tonnage even though the French protested. How Germany took advantage of Britain’s terms is told in Review of Reviews, New York, as follows: Today Germany possesses three pocket battleships (10,000 tons each) named Deutschland, Scheer, and Spee.

THERE ARE places in this New World where older roots have struck deep; places where language and custom still hold against all comers.
