WE ARE endeavoring to get a job as catcher with an expedition that is going to the Siamese jungle to bring back alive a collection of man-hunting hamadryads. As Gordon Sinclair told you recently, the hamadryad is the only snake that can outrun a horse and attacks a man on sight.

A Canadian Achievement In your issue of September 1, you quote from the Manchester Guardian under the heading, "New Fuel is an Achievement.” I am sure that Canadians will be interested in learning that, as a matter of fact, so-called “colloidal fuel” was produced in the laboratories of the Canada Department of Mines fourteen years ago.

HIS WORSHIP Mayor Henry J. Rankin, chief magistrate of the Municipality of Vaughan, closed and locked the door of his place of business for the night and chuckled as he gave it a trial shake. He took a last glimpse through the windows at the night light left glowing softly over the dialled wall safe, wherein reposed the worldly fortunes of Rankin’s coal and wood business, and chuckled again as he walked to his car.

MARGARET PENNELL
NLY an Englishwoman living in England could have written “Woman Worship.” It represents so exactly the Englishwoman’s point of view toward a husband. Just to clear up any misapprehension at the outset, let me say that I am an Englishwoman with purely British tradition back of me, although Canadian in education and experience.

C. L. SIBLEY
HAVE no hesitation in saying that the credit of Quebec is superior to that of Canada.” was the proud boast of Premier Taschereau at the last session of the Quebec Legislature. Nevertheless, this staid old province, where thrift is a tradition and conservatism an instinct, whose leaders have avoided so many of the pitfalls which have plunged other communities into debt— this province has been so smitten by the hurricane of public expenditure and taxation that has swept across the continent that its governing authorities are at their wits’ end to devise means whereby money can be raised to keep pace with their ever mounting expenditures.

It isn’t battlefields and guns That makes a nation great. Or clanking arms or marching men Or panoply of State. It isn’t pageantry or power Where Might and Triumph ride, For Kingdoms are not built on war Or nations fed on pride. It’s stony fields and little brooks With hidden age-old springs, It’s tender songs of youth and love That some old mother sings.

I HAVE read Maclean's for about twenty years, but I never before read anything in it that made me so fighting mad as 'Grattan O’Leary’s “Thar’s Gold in Them Thar Stills.” Liquor revenue for ten years, $551,000,000 multiplied by four, which I am told is the actual cost to the consumer, gives the terrific total of $2,204,000,000 spent for alcoholic liquors in ten years by a population of 10,374,196 in 1931, 8,788,483 in 1921 and so on during the decade, the average population being about 9,500,000.

A DEFINITION of what Fascism really is, states the Morning Post (London), is given by Premier Mussolini in the Italian Encyclopedia. According to the Premier: “Fascism is not in fact a doctrine but a manner of living. Fascism conceives life as a struggle in which it is the duty of the individual man first to conquer himself and so make himself a worthy instrument for service to himself, the nation and humanity.

New Rooms for Old
Skilful rearrangement of the furnishings will often transform the commonplace room into the distinctive room

F. L. DEN. SCOTT
THERE are two ways, generally speaking, to bring new interest to old rooms. One is by the introduction of new furnishings; the other by rearranging the old ones to the best advantage. In the room illustrated here both methods were used. A few new pieces, new draperies and slip covers on two of the chairs plus imagination and untiring effort in trying new vantage points for the original furnishings, resulted in an original and interesting living room.

THE stability of gold-mining stocks in the face of general declines in all classes of securities has gained for these investments the reputation of being practically depression proof.
