MR. RICHARD HARLANDTRESHAM, of Toronto, slipped a trifle lower into the depths of the smokeroom chair and surveyed his fellow passengers moodily. A moldy bunch, was his dispassionate verdict. Ghastly thought, having to spend the next five days in such company.

TED REEVE
THE summer whirling off the sport spindle has been notable for introducing the new and novel into America’s oldest game. Lacrosse has been brought indoors, a roof put over the home as it were; the teams have been shaved down to seven men a side, and the going speeded up into a mixture of hockey, jai-aili and catch-as-catch-can wrestling that has proved to be rough enough and thrilling enough to satisfy large numbers of the paying public.

A DRY, crackling heat hung over the vast plain. The sun burned down blank and soulless from an empty sky. Water holes dried. The waters of the lake sank lower and lower until its lagoons and shallows were wide muddy reaches whose sulphuric exhalations were carried across the veldt by the burning wind.

As a Mennonite, I read with some amusement Helen Zado’s so-called pen picture of the Mennonites of Western Canada. I was amazed to learn that Mennonites had no country or rather nationalism; that there was such a thing asa “Mennonite language;” that we were not permitted to have pictures on our walls; that we were just barely emerging out of the hazy mist of medievalism; and a host of other things which as a Mennonite I should surely know.

A GIANT relative of the calla lily, known as the “sacred African lily,” has a smell so atrociously bad that it sends people scampering out of any room in which it may be placed. Professor H. S. Conard, of Grinnell College, tells about an experience he had with it as follows:

Canning Simplified
Given careful attention to detail, even the most inexperienced housekeeper can achieve success in preserving both fruit and vegetables

HELEN G. CAMPBELL
TO CAN or not to can, that is the question. For many housekeepers are of two minds whether it is better to use tinned products upon which they can place dependence, or to attempt the preserving of fruit and vegetables in their own kitchen. Undoubtedly commercial canned varieties have attained such a degree of perfection and are available at such reasonable prices that they are accepted as staples.

Question—I am holding debentures of the London-Canadian Investment Corporation bought at prices substantially higher than the prevailing market of $60. I was wondering whether to sell them now and take my loss or to hold for six months or a year in the hope that the price will advance again.
