NORMAN REILLY RAINE
THE fact that a half gale, wet and salty, was blowing in from the Grand Banks that wild November night was inconvenient, but not important, to the gathering of friends at Major Freddy Grenfell’s North Arm dinner party. Grenfell himself was not important except as a music lover and a host, but as his heritage absolved him of the need to appear familiar with night-club hostesses and head waiters he sought other roads to fame.

A. RAYMOND MULLENS
A BOUT 1900 a use was found for what up to that time had been more or less a waste product of the Ontario petroleum field, the bulk of it being used for cleaning out the oil wells. This was known as 74-76 gravity gasoline and it was marketed as a stove cleanser under the ear-pleasing name of Deodorized Stove Gasoline.

CLELAND LUNDY
JOE BLAINE knew that something, some problem, was bothering Anne. It had been in her mind all through the evening meal. He could tell by the way she looked off over his head occasionally and took tiny nibbles at her food. And now that he had retired to his big chair, turned on the electric grate, lighted a cigarette and laid it carefully in the ashtray while he opened the paper at the sports page, she still sat at the table.

W. STEWART WALLACE
FEW murder trials have attracted more widespread attention than that of Reginald Birchall for the murder of F. C. Benwell. The little courthouse in Woodstock, Ont., in which the trial took place in the autumn of 1890, was taxed to its capacity to provide room for the fifty or more reporters assigned to write up the case; and full accounts of the trial were published not only in the newspapers of Canada and the United States, but also in those of Great Britain, France, Germany, and Italy.

WHEN gongs clang on Parliament Hill, shattering the silence of marble corridors, a procession forms outside Mr. Speaker’s door. Members of Parliament stand aside, casual visitors eddy into little recesses under Gothic arches, while Mr. Speaker, the Clerk of the Commons, the Bearer of the Mace and other dignitaries, all resplendent in their robes of office, march solemnly to the council chamber of the people.

WILLIAM WEBSTER
THERE is a controversy respecting the proposed route of the Trans-Canada Highway—that portion lying between North Bay and the cities of Fort William and Port Arthur at the Canadian head of the lakes. E. Wharton Shaw, in his article in MacLean’s, “A Compromise Route for the Trans-Canada Highway,” makes that quite clear.

THE NINETEENTH CENTURY believed in Tight lacing, Steam and Democracy. And of these three, the greatest was Democracy. New Keyboard Used on Pianos
Invention Increases Range and Technique of the Ambitious Player.

[no value]
MUSICAL TRADE REVIEW
SOMETHING new in the musical world is a double-keyboard piano, which has been invented by Emanuel Moor, a Swiss musician. It is claimed that this keyboard simplifies the complexities of finger technique, increases richness and sonority by enabling chords of greater extent to be grasped and manipulated, and makes possible such feats as chromatic glissando which cannot be played upon an ordinary keyboard Elaborate fingering, as in thirds and sixths, may be doubled in the octave, which permits the composer to write music of great brilliancy, bringing in virtually the whole keyboard, whereas ordinarily there is a gap between, as well as on either outer side, of the two hands.

Soviets Revert to Piecework
Payment According to Amount of Work Done Violates Communist Principle.

NEW YORK TIMES
THE basic idea back of the Communist economics, that every worker shall share equally in the fruits of the combined toil of all, seems to have been found impracticable. Recently the Soviet masters of Russia decreed that workers shall be paid according to the amount of work they do, thus taking a leaf out of the capitalist system.

Editor, MacLean’s: In your issue dated February 15 there appeared an article of considerable length by Olin Kerr and entitled “Lottery Loot.” The article in question was, on the whole, “fair comment upon a matter of public importance;” but, as this Association is particularly mentioned in the text and illustrations, I beg to enter strong and emphatic protest against the term “Racket” when you apply that term to our Charity Sweepstakes, thereby giving the impression that we are guilty of “Racketeering and unfair methods.”

METAL in various forms has been used on highways experimentally in several places; but a continuous base of welded steel or iron, such as is used in a road recently completed near Springfield, Illinois, would seem to be a new idea. It is claimed that such a base combines strength and flexibility in just the right degree.

RECENT experiments show that a sheep may continue to be a wool producer long after it is dead. They are the result of wonderful work done by the Research Association of the British Woollen and Worsted Industries with this object in view. Years ago it was known that a tiny piece of muscle from a dead animal could be kept alive and healthy in the laboratory by chemical means.

THERE IS an aesthetic as well as a practical side to dining, and the clever home manager realizes that the successful meal is one which not merely satisfies the appetite but gives enjoyment in the eating and pleases the artistic sense. She delights to compliment her family by well-chosen fare, carefully prepared and daintily served.
