A forthright statement of the case for a Canadian national flag

HUGH SAVAGE
ON Dominion Day last, at the temporary quarters of the Canadian legation in the city of Tokio, Japan, “the Canadian national emblem” was raised officially for the first time on Asiatic soil. What was this emblem? It was not the Union Jack. In August, 50,000 Boy Scouts from almost every nation gathered in England for the scout movement’s coming-of-age jamboree.

When MacCrimmond was evicted That the deer might take his place, He sailed away for Canada With a shadow on his face. When ploughing in Ontario He’d see a heather hill. And MacCrimmond brought his pipes with him— His laddie has them still! The lad saw never Scotland, But his father taught him play The pibroch and the coronach, The reel and the strathspey.

THE late afternoon shadows lay on the close-cropped lawn which stretched down to the road from the “old Aspinwall place.” The long, graceful arms of the elm trees trembled slightly in warm currents of air. Bright flowers twinkled on the borders of the garden.

DOROTHY M. DOUGHTY
IT WAS morning. Mother Gunderson stood upon her back steps gazing at her lines of freshly hung clothes, and noted with a sense of pride the challenge of whiteness her handicraft flaunted to Mother Nature’s white-cloud-wash moving slowly in the blue sky above.

FREDERICK EDWARDS
ON A DAY in autumn, seven years ago, a politician of no consequence, standing in a commonplace room in Montreal’s East End, watched raindrops chase each other down a windowpane, while he wondered dourly whom he might find to do the routine work for a political club which he was organizing.

IN THE closing years of the twentieth century when the Hudson Bay route has become one of the great maritime highways of the world, who will remember the sheer courage and unswerving tenacity of six men who undertook, at peril of their lives, to rend the veil which, since the beginning of time, has shrouded the Canadian Northland?

DOUGLAS EPPES
IN THE early life of Toronto, Cannon Street was probably a cowpath. That seems the only explanation for the meandering course it takes in a city where the majority of its streets do their utmost to adhere to Euclid’s definition of a straight line.

LOUIS ARTHUR CUNNINGHAM
TODAY I heard the crisp, hollow tap-tap of the wooden mallets hitting the calking-irons to drive oakum into the seams of ships; to make ships staunch as the immortal clippers that once were launched in this very spot. Tap-tap-tap—in the once great shipyards in the old ports of the Sea Provinces the sound is heard seldom or never; the ships and the master-builders are only memories.

ALFRED PEARCE DENNIS
AN INTERESTING contribution to what is one of the world’s greatest political enigmas is made in a recent issue of the World’s Work. Alfred Pearce Dennis, formerly Commercial Attaché to the United States Embassy at Rome, discusses the question, “Is Italy really coming back under Fascism?” and arrives to the conclusion that there is no doubt about it.

“Spoonerisms” Not all Spooner
But Oxford Don's Name is Now Adopted Into Language as Father of Verbal Lapses.

MANCHESTER GUARDIAN
IF DR. SPOONER, the Oxford Don famed for putting the cart before the horse in his speech, never made but one such blunder, he gave a word to the language which will never be forgotten. A “Spoonerism” is formed by the transposition of letters, initial or otherwise, and the Doctor’s famous “kinquering congs their tatles tike” is the prime specimen.

JOHN O’LONDON’S WEEKLY
MUCH is heard of the men who make our laws but very little of the man who drafts the acts which are afterwards embodied in our legislation. John O’London’s Weekly gives an interesting account of the activities of Sir William Graham Harrison, whose duty it is to put into accurate and legal language the acts which the British government in power wishes to introduce into Parliament.

HARRY A. OVERSTREET.
A MAN in the grip of a hobby is no longer looked upon as queer. We are in peril of becoming queer, if we do not have hobbies, if we persist in one consuming interest to the exclusion of all others. In bygone times when everyone’s work was diversified, a man possessed of a hobby may have seemed lopsided to his neighbors.

HAVEN'T you often wished that you knew more ways to use raisins in your cooking? Authorities on diet say that we should eat more raisins, for they are rich in health-giving elements. Except for the popular raisin pie, there are not many well-known recipes used in everyday cooking that call for raisins.

MARY AGNES PEASE
THERE is in most families a struggle between two opposing forces: a desire for change and a strong resistance to it. In the home life it is usually the husband who is opposed to any difference in the wonted habit. He wants his home to be an oasis of calm familiarity, an abode that he can enter in the dark with the certainty that everything is in its accustomed place.

A. W. BLUE
