The New Serial by the author of "Smoking Flax."
Perhaps the term hero, with its suggestion of high enterprise, sits inappropriately upon the chief character of this tale; there was in Gander Stake little of that quality which is associated with the clash of righteous steel or the impact of noble purpose. Yet that he was without heroic fibre I will not admit, and you who read these pages shall judge whether or not the word is wholly UNWARRANTED.-THE AUTHOR

Robert Stead
THE eleventh of April, 1896,is not generally known to be a date of special significance, yet it was on that day, or, to be more exact, that night, that Gander Stake made his entry into a not overhospitable world. There is no means of knowing at exactly what date young Gander began making appraisals of his new environment.

FEAST TIME
We have had stories about fishermen and stories about fish caught by fishermen but it has remained for a Canadian writer, Hubert Evans, to give us fish stories that reveal the grim, under-water world in a manner which leaves no doubt as to the right of your real flesh-and-blood fish to be included among the heroes of nature stories

HUBERT EVANS
THE big char—the wolf of that underwater world—could not have chosen a more deadly place from which to launch her raids. The end of the lake between the wooded mountains, closed in upon the water until it slipped into the creek that guided it down the valley.

THE TRAIL OF ’TWENTY-SIX
“A mucky gash in the earth, like the excavation for a sewer in a new suburban street." That description of the Dome workings at Red Lake does not suggest romance, but it does suggest the spirit in which this article was written. Read it and you will have a new respect for the sourdoughs and the mining engineers who are probing the secrets of Canada's newest gold field

ALLAN SWINTON
IT HAS become a byword that romance is swiftly dying in the world, yet, eight hours from Winnipeg, I descended from a Pullman, on a bitter April night, and entered on a scene that might have sprung to life from Service’s colorful doggerel. As the train pulled out, I felt through the dark along a narrow boardwalk, lined on either side by tethered sleighdogs howling like lost souls in Hades, to a looming building, its doorway hedged about by toboggans up-ended in the snow.

FOREST SUBTERFUGE
Romance ever pursued D’Ancoup and Livarot. On this occasion, it brought in its train desperate hazards by fire, snow and water. But as Legrand said: “It is to become educated, to travel with the Circle of Blood ”

BENGE ATLEE
THE tang of coining winter was in the air; through hardwood trees, bare of leaves, a wind stirred over the Mont du Nord that moaned, regretfully, of summer gone. Two weeks before, those last two members of the Circle of Blood, Andre Livarot and Rene D’Ancoup, had come to their cabin at the northern end of Lac Kedjimkujik to take up winter quarters and hunt the mink, marten and fox over a world that would soon be snowwhite.

Co-operation Bears Fruit in B. C.
During the past ten years the value of British Columbia’s fruit production has more than quadrupled. Of late, the Sunset Province has been selling onions in New Zealand, tomatoes in New York, and apples in the far-famed apple country of Ontario—in other words, performing prodigious feats of marketing. How is it done? Here’s the answer

W. E. McTAGGART
BREAKING records, upsetting established trade practices and hitting a stiff pace along the road to the Town of Orderly Marketing are now everyday affairs with the fruit and vegetable growers of British Columbia. No matter what the product, the British Columbians seem to be able to do something with it.

MR. DEPUITREY LEADS
Some men can settle a world war with two teaspoons and a salad fork; others can establish a sound economic policy for a country without moving from a Pullman chair. But when Reggie DePuitrey, who had never played tennis, said he could lick a champion, he backed himself with $100,500. People said: “It is to laugh!” It is, too

FORREST!” “Yes, sir.” Mr. Reginald DePuitrey, reclining exquisitely beneath a lacebordered sheet, yawned generously and with an articulation distinctly bovine. For a moment or two with a mildly blue and contemplative eye, he watched his valet strop a razor.

J. W. L. FORSTER
DOCTOR ALEXANDER WHYTE says“Art is that ceaseless music which links up all the centuries in a great spiritual language that moves where no other influence can.” As Homer chanted stories and rhymes of old, so his successor, the Oriental Story Teller, is often a literary genius; and by the same token of grace, why should not the men and women who embellish fireside evenings with garlands of festive tales and dinner hours with good stories, have place beside the writers of fiction and history?

Scrub-Boy to General Manager at 44
As a preparation for the general managership of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Sydney Bogan used to rise at daybreak and hurry to his job at the little bank of Springhill, Nova Scotia, where he put in a couple of hours as scrub-boy. And an excellent start, too, he thinks, for the career which has landed him in one of the highest positions in the Canadian financial world.

FRANK J. AYEARST
WHEN you think of the modern young bank clerk, does your mind conjure up the picture of a young man who rises at daybreak, hurries to the bank, sweeps the floors, washes the windows, cleans the brass and generally gets the office in shape for the day’s business?

FEED ’EM AND WEEP
Great-Aunt Cornelia had never had a husband but, according to her recipe for living, there was but one way to hold a husband’s love. Fortunately for Doris, she found out in time that aunty’s philosophy of marriage was just a thought too sweeping.

THE front door closed with a sharp, decisive click. The sound sent Doris scurrying from her gloomy contemplation of the sunny world outside the kitchen window, to a more active position at the white-topped table. She snatched up the bottle of cream, and emptied its contents into the patent cream-whipper then seized the handle and whirled it violently.

SIR WALTER GILBEY
WRITING in the London Sunday Times, Sir Walter Gilbey, who has had both the means and the experience to enable him to experiment with agricultural problems, freely admits that he has no desire to carry his researches further. As he explains: I have just sold my Essex farm, of fairly good heart, with good cottages and buildings, just over a mile from a main railway and thirty-five miles from London.

SLOWLY but surely the patient but ubiquitous equine is being seen on English streets once more. In the face of the enormous and increasing expansion of the motor transport industry this is remarkable, but there it is. Writing in the Manchester Guardian, R.C. tell us that there are more horses in service in the streets than three years ago; the makers of harness and saddlery, chains, hames, bits, and other furniture, metal and leather of the kind that goes with the use of the horse, have been aware of the movement for some time.

FRANCIS GOW SMITH
MORE than 20,000 persons are stung by snakes in Brazil every year, and the number who die from bites by poisonous reptiles is about 5,000. To produce serums that will save as many of these lives as possible, the government has established at Sao Paulo a snake farm under Dr. Vital Brazil, a scientist whom Francis Gow Smith, writing for World's Work, describes as unique among the savants of his day.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR
HOUSES of correction “to prepare the prisoner during his sentence for reentrance into the community so that he shall become conscious of his responsibility and be willing to become a better man after his dismissal than before his imprisonment” have now been in operation for six years at Hamburg, under the direction of Herr Koch, of whose system and its -results a Leipzig correspondent of the Christian Science Monitor gives us the following description following a visit to the institutions:— The life in the prison of Furlsbuttel near Hamburg shows the visitor how thorough the work is, which in its variety gives the possibility of free choice and which combined with sport promotes the habit of strict self-discipline.

PUTTING PERSONALITY INTO YOUR GARDEN
Character and a sense of romance may be added to even the smallest garden with a few well-chosen decorative pieces

ANNE ELIZABETH WILSON
THERE are many old gardens which possess something more than an appeal to the mere aesthetic love of flowers—they have personality as well, and the tokens of their owners’ tastes and interests persist long after they themselves have passed beyond the making of gardens.
