New Lives for Old
Vigorous, vital—freed from constipation, skin and stomach ills — through one simple food

NOT a “cure-all,” not a medicine in any sense—Fleischmann’s Yeast is simply a remarkable fresh food. The millions of tiny active yeast plants in every cake invigorate the whole system. They aid digestion—clear the skin—banish the poisons of constipation.

THE PARIAH DOG
The color of the East, the mystery of the desert, a desperate battle among sand dunes, love, hate, and intrigue under the torrid heat of a Sudanese sky — all these are woven into this tale of heroic adventure.

NORMAN REILLY RAINE
A SERIAL IN TWO PARTS: PART ONE THE glaring day melted into dusk, star-sprinkled and comparatively cool, and shadows deepened to purple in the twisting streets and sandy square of Tel-el-Rahib, a tiny, military outpost in the midst of the Nubian Desert.

WHAT AILS THE MARITIMES?
Of recent years there has been unmistakable indication that the people of the Maritime Provinces are genuinely disturbed about their status in the Canadian Confederation. As a result, “What Ails the Maritimes?” has been a frequent question on the lips of other Canadians. The desire of a Maritimer to answer that question inspired this article.

WILLIAM BOYD MACODRUM
IS CANADA playing fair with the Maritime Provinces? During the course of the 1925 Federal election campaign, William Lyon Mackenzie King, Prime Minister of Canada, visited Nova Scotia. While there he asked: “What are Maritime Rights?” Recently the Government of which he is the head answered his query by the appointment of a $25,000 Royal Commission to investigate the grievances of the Provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

The Cruise of the Barge Tremblay
How the “Tremblay” came to Montreal with a cargo of contraband : what befell the “Tremblay” after capture by Canadian Customs officers, and the subsequent exploits of these valiant officers — this is the plot around which the Parliamentary Customs Inquiry Committee has fashioned a hair-raising tale.

GRATTAN O’LEARY
ANOTHER poet should arise to do for the barge Tremblay what Drummond did for the Julie Plante. Or, if not a poet, then a Phillips Oppenheim should be enlisted to chronicle the story of this sea-battered old hulk. For, little in the lore of smuggling, or of piracy, or of more modern adventures of bootlegging buccaneers, holds more of gripping interest than the story of the Tremblay.

You Know What Husbands Are
A little scandalous gossip, especially if husbands are the topic, does put a little kick in the Pekoe. Occasionally it has other results not quite so pleasant.

ANDY FAULKNER thrust his arms into the sleeves of his overcoat with a sense of satisfaction. He had been addressing a meeting of chartered accountants on “Some Uncommon Phases of Modern Accountancy” and knew from the way in which several of the men had spoken to him that it had been well expressed.

CHARLES LUGRIN SHAW
SEBASTIAN’S coming was almost as sudden and surprising as his going. He was just a child when he came to us. In those days logging was a new industry in the Snow River region and most of the revenue came from furs. Every spring the valley resounded with the songs of French trappers and their families as they came down the river in the fur barges.

IT WAS a pitch black night off the Queen Charlotte Islands. A tiny coasting vessel carefully edged her way toward a boom of logs which served as a landing stage. Bathed in her searchlight stood a Japanese fisherman, his bare toes clinging to the wet and slippery timbers, in his hand a flickering lantern.

THE EDITOR.
I’ve heard you in the Pullman smoker relate how you got So-and-So to put his name on the dotted line. Always there is one sale which stands out from the others, one of which you are most proud. It may not have brought you the largest commission, but maybe it meant the winning of a customer’s confidence.

IT TOOK some weeks of married life to convince Bob Harrington that being married didn’t solve every problem. It was a shock to him. He had been so sure that it would that, ‘‘after we are married,” had become a convenient pigeon-hole for everything that did not seem quite right at the moment.

Dunning Dares to Take a Chance
When the doctor told him that he would have to stop working, young Charles Dunning tackled a pioneer s job on a Western Canadian farm. When his farmer boss told him he wasn't strong enough to earn ten dollars a month, he took up his own quarter section and did so well that in twenty years he was premier of his province. Now they're wondering what he is going to do at Ottawa.

JOHN NELSON
MOST people who traveled the Canadian West during the past decade became familiar with two prophecies: Everyone agreed that there would be “a good crop next year” and nearly everyone that “Charlie Dunning will end up at Ottawa.” There was not necessarily any connection between the two predictions—one was the expression of a fond hope, the other of an almost universal intuition— but the fates decreed that the two events, so long foretold by prophets in coonskins, should “fall in” within twelvemonths of one another.

HERBERT PATRICK LEE
THERE are many claims to the doubtful honor of being an inhabitant of the most isolated settlement in the world, of being an inhabitant of that spot on the surface of the globe most remote from the rest of humanity. Missionaries living on lonely islands in the South Pacific; settlers on such out of the - way spots as Terra del Fuego; occupants of scattered posts in the heart of Africa; lonely traders in the wildernesses of North-West Canada and South America; men attached to cable stations on rocky islets, all claim the distinction, if one can call it such, of being more out of the world than any of their kind.

NORMA PHILLIPS MUIR
“ITSN’T it wonderful, Peter?” I whispered as we stood at the rail of the good ship Erratic and steamed up the Mersey. “The Old World at last!” “It almost seems like coming home, doesn’t it, Honey?” he said, squeezing my arm. “It is the land of our forebears and—” “Forebores,” I giggled “Pop, you didn’t tell me about the little boats having colored sails and—” “Can’t you see without speech?” he asked.

ART AND DECORATION
The Home Beautiful
THE HOUSE IN SUMMER GARB
[no value]
[no value]

ANNE ELIZABETH WILSON
IN CANADA people do not need to flee from their city houses in summer as they do elsewhere, and for that reason, I think, the turning of the winter home into the summer dwelling is an art at which Canadians should be particularly adept. Perhaps it is only imagination which makes us feel warm when we look at maroon plush draperies, or feel unaccountably refreshed and cool at the spectacle of gray and green chintz against wicker—but if psychology can make us comfortable and our homes attractive during the summer months, by all means let us study and practise it.

TARIFF CHANGES ARE UNWISE FOR THEY SCARE U.S. CAPITAL AND CANADA NEEDS MONEY

J . HERBERT HODGINS
HAVE we set up a bogey on our front step to frighten capital from our door? In other words, have Ottawa’s Budget decisions created, abroad, a feeling of tariff instability liable in its ultimate reaction to deter American capital from further participation in our national enterprises? J. Courtiand Elliott, a young Canadian economist, writing in the New York Annalist, is disposed to consider that our “tariff hazards may deter American investors,” and I find that this apprehension is broadening its reflection.
