PERHAPS it is quite natural that a series of articles, or short stories. centred about one special subject, or a group of the same principal characters, should attract more interest and attention than the same number of unrelated articales or stories. Examples which have appeared in .MacLean's in the past include, of course, the ‘‘Peter and Pokey" stories, by Norma Phillips Muir: the "Tench Story” detective yarns. by Llewellyn Hughed the present series of psydetective stories by Harvey J. O’Higgins: the remarkable series of articles by Margot Asquith: and the racing yarns and cowboy yarns (the latter built around that fascinating character.

J. HERBERT HODGINS
How much will the farmers of Canada have to spend this year? We have reached the turn of the year when Mr. Business Man watches anxiously from week to week for authoritative crop reports, particularly pertaining to western Canada. Upon the outturn of the prairies and upon international demands for our cereals chiefly depends the outlook for business in Canada for the twelve months to come.

Manages "Greatest Show on Earth"
All Canadians and a great many other people on this continent and abroad are familiar with the Canadian National Exhibition. Here is an intimate sketch of the mainspring of that great show—a figure without whom the fair would have gone on, perhaps, but not with the magnitude and tremendous winning spirit which it presents to-day.

PUBLIC OPINION
THE stand taken by many prominent Labor members in the British House on the matter of Imperial preference has called forth considerable comment, some of it caustic, from English newspapers. The Star invites Ramsay MacDonald, as leader of the Labor party, “to state frankly, as a matter of great public importance, what is the present official policy of Labor on the vital issue of free trade; and, if it still supports free trade, to say whether he is prepared to repudiate the protectionists of his party in any electoral appeal to the country on the issue.”

DEARBORN INDEPENDENT
WORLD shortage of rubber and control of the visible supply by British interests has brought out indignant protests from the Independent, (Henry Ford’s paper). It first should be noted, however, that Sir Eric Geddes at a Dunlop meeting explained the cause of this shortage as due to “a restriction scheme in force which limits to certain percentages the rubber which we, as producers under the British flag, are allowed to export from our properties, except under extreme penalty, and I submit,” he continued, “that when an artificial factor of this kind is introduced into the price of our principal raw material, we should certainly review the matter very carefully.”

MYRTLE B . PATTERSON
A WOMAN stood alone in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Her manner was quiet and assured, but her quick eyes lost never a move, and her trained ears not a word, of those about her. She was fighting a battle; pitting her talents against some of the cleverest analytical minds in the province.

MAKING CHOCOLATE FUDGE

INA WINIFRED COLWELL
MANY the concoctions I have had passed to me in the name of chocolate fudge, and in like manner, many the concoctions I have passed out as chocolate fudge. Lately though, I have taxed my ingenuity and combined several recipes, eliminating here, adding there, until I feel that I have a recipe worth while—one that rarely fails, and is almost sure to be commended.

TREASURE IN CHESTS
[no value]
[no value]
ANNE ELIZABETH WILSON
THERE is a piece of furni ture dear to my heart, which I recall out of the first depths of child hood. It is known as "The Hall Chest." In any house we had, I remember it was always some where near the front door with a Sheffield card tray upon it. The chest was the proper place for a guest to lay his or her hat and cloak; the high arms on either side an admiralle place to rest a cane.
