MANY compliments for, and a considerable curiosity about, Grattan O'Leary, the pungent and prophetic political pundit, have been accumulating in my sanctum. One reader, from Vancouver, writes to inquire if Grattan O’Leary is a pen name, or whether the owner of this name is really as Irish as he sounds.

THE strapping son of a Ruthenian immigrant of the Great Trek of the late nineties, strode into the sitting room of a country hotel in northern Saskatchewan, removed his gauntlet, and took a drink. The water was distinctly alkaline, but he smacked his lips in satisfaction, and then devoted his attention to rubbing his ear, the tip of which was frozen.

A . M . ALLAN
BUSINESS life insurance meets a recognized need and is as valuable to the incorporated company as it is to the partnership. Every incorporated company has one or more valuable men in its employ whose experience, representing years of training, has a dollars and cents value, which, while it cannot be measured actually, can be approximated.

Shall We Reform Mothers’ Day?

NELLIE L. McCLUNG
I AM very tired of the things that are said about us on Mothers' Day-though I know the speakers are well intentioned. They draw such a drab picture of a mother. She is old, and bent and gray; her eyes are dimmed with tears; her hands are gnarled and rough; her clothes are rusty, and out of date; but her children are urged to be kind to her, for all that, remembering all the things She did for them.

GOLD! The whisper has gone forth and reached out with its million tentacles into the moss-country of the far north, into the southland clear to the Mexican border, and eastward to the seaboard of the Atlantic. Gold! Free gold in the Cassiar! Since the report came down from the north late last October, of the discovery made by Bill Grady and Hugh Ford of rich placer diggings on Gold Pan Creek, Cassiar District, Northern British Columbia, supply merchants of Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle have been stocking up in all those things a miner needs.

IT WAS chance that brought the stranger down that silent street; chance and hunger and a driving rain. It was dark there and the street lamps, overshadowed by towering warehouses, cast but fitful glare. It was quiet, too, with the oppressive quiet of deserted streets.

RUTH FENWICK stood upon the flat outcropping of rock which formed her door step and watched the coast steamer back away from the pier. AN EASTER recess and nearly three weeks of budget oratory halted that headlong rush of Parliament about which I wrote in my last article. JAY POLLOCK
“TRAVEL as far inland as you like in our islands and you will find sea phrases helping people to express themselves,” writes Jay Pollock in the Daily Mail (London), regarding the prevalence of sailors’ vernacular all over the land. He proceeds to enumerate some of the many vivid phrases which the landlubber has appropriated from the marine vocabulary:

RT. HON. SIR GEORGE E. FOSTER
WRITING on the subject of “Imperial Unity” in the Nineteenth Century, Right Hon. Sir George E. Foster sees no cause for taking seriously those alarmists who hint at disintegration of the British Empire through a gradual breaking away of the Dominions from the Mother Country and from one another, when they might split up into separate states or be absorbed by powerful nations adjacent to their territory.

HOLLISTER NOBLE
A GROUP of French scholars are coming to the rescue of the reputation of Bluebeard. His case, after many centuries, is to be tried before the courts in an effort to clear his memory. Bluebeard’s original was Sire Gilles de Rais, Seigneur de Laval, Baron de Retz, Marshal of France, a military genius and a comrade of Jeanne d’Arc.

MANY long-cherished illusions about Monte Carlo, the fashionable gambling centre in the French Riviera are dispelled by Lovat Fraser in an article, “The Truth About Monte Carlo,” appearing in the Daily Mail (London). NORMA PHILLIPS MUIR
SOMEBODY once said that emergency was an opportunity to show the depth of one’s resourcefulness, and a hostess needs both resource and tact in an emergency. It is, after all, the little attentions to one’s guests that count for so much in their enjoyment—sufficient small ash trays that the men need not all gather together within range of the smoker’s stand—the extra spoon on the tea tray for the guest who drops hers and hates the commotion attendant upon her hostess going after another, the lights shaded to prevent glare, the odd cushions made to be leaned against and not merely ornamental, it is these apparently non-essential things which make your guests feel that they are really wanted and their comfort a matter of first importance to yourself, and so puts them at their ease both in the physical and mental sense.

MENTAL laziness more than lack of money keeps people from traveling. Many who could well afford the expense of a journey are deterred by the fear of exchanging the familiar comforts of home for the worry of catching trains, uncertain sleep in bunks, and strange, foreign foods and words.

Charming Canadian Homes: No. 1, A Delightful Colonial Type
[no value]

ANNE ELIZABETH WILSON
ONE of the most enchanting houses I have ever seen is that greywhite stucco Colonial which stands on the crescent of Heathdale Road, Toronto. It is a white house, and yet as you approach it, you are suddenly aware of color. Your heart has first been taken unaware by shutters of pale apple green (as you look closer you will discover the delicate cutting of a bird in their upper panels) while the chimney, branching up the side of the house from a sill-high base wall, is fashioned of that soft-tinted rock called ashler.
