In the Editor's Confidence

J. L. R
THE profoundest problem that ever confronts the Editor, perhaps, in the performance of his many duties, is to find his own solution of the vexed problem as to what the public wants. It is a problem that has no answer conveniently provided at the back of the book.

SPIRIT OF HOPEFULNESS OVERRIDES CROP KILLERS AS AUTUMN APPROACHES
[no value]

J. HERBERT HODGINS
AS WE approach the autumn season there are two influences of prime importance bearing upon the business outlook, the crop out-turn and the imminence of a considerable government loan. All eyes just now are on the western cereal harvest, in fact, a London cable impresses that “Canada has become the centre of interest in the wheat market of the world.”

THE Dominion’s debt—federal, provincial and municipal—now exceeds four billion dollars, according to the compilation of the Financial Post. Nearly seventy per cent, of this vast obligation is internal, which is an impressive demonstration of Canada’s own financial absorptive powers.

A. M. ALLAN
OCCASIONALLY readers write to the insurance editor asking his advice regarding the exchanging of one type of life insurance policy for another. The following question is a typical one: “I am contemplating exchanging a straight life policy, non-participating, for $4,000 for a Twenty-Pay Life non-participating for the same amount.

OF A May evening which should have been as calm as the proverbial May morning—and which would have been had nature been permitted to reign undisturbed —Theodore Norton, Second, returned to Elton Heights. Returned as was his wont, somewhat in need of a shave, attired in nondescript khaki and showing the marks of the many miles he had traversed since his last appearance there.

HOLLAND comforted himself with the reflection that he was coming out instead of going in. An August sun baked the south-facing Slope of country rock where oncegreen moss was now scorched to a golden brown. An occasional solitary fir accentuated by its cool shadow the heat that brought sweatbeads trickling down Holland's forehead to make his eyes smart.

WAR, as the one agent that can keep a country virile, is still the ideal of a not inconsiderable percentage of the German people. They see in war, not merely a means to an end, but an end in itself. The Germans supporting this “ideal,” find expression in the German racial freedom party—the party of Gen. Erich Ludendorff and Count Ernst Zu Reventlow.

IT WAS Sir Charles Tupper, in 1895, who first appreciated the national “cementing” influences of the Canadian National Exhibition. “I have had it from the lips of men who were brought up anti-Confederates,” he said, “that one visit to this fair convinced them that much of their creed in regard to the value of a Canadian Confederation had been entirely mythical and that here, chiefly, in their travels through Canada, they have begun to learn what a great people you—and they were including themselves—were, after all, with such an exhibition as you have given to the country at large, and to no particular locality.”

DOROTHY G. BELL
IN A tiny office, in one of Vancouver’s business blocks there is to be found a broad, happy smile, a firm hearty handclasp that makes one feel, under any conditions, that all’s right with the world. The giver of the smile and the handclasp, the occupant of the office, is Mrs. Mabel Ingram, one of the most successful business women of the city, and among the most public-spirited and generous.

DOROTHY BOWMAN BARKER
"BILLY, Billy, for heaven’s sake come quick! Snoozer has the new Persian kitten by the neck.” Jean Little, her wealth of brown hair flying in every direction, tears of distraction rolling down her cheeks, was chasing a small wire-haired terrier around the yard of their suburban bungalow, in a frantic effort to rescue her terrified pet.

EDWINA SETON
Question—F. B., Man.: Will you kindly tell me if there is in existence to-day a fund called Carnegie Church Organ Fund. There was a few years back. If so, could you give me the address? Answer—I spent a good deal of time trying to follow up a clue as to the existence of this fund, but all I could learn after repeated efforts was that the Carnegie Foundation is to be found in Fifth Avenue, New York City.

Tables for Beauty and Service

KATHERINE M. CALDWELL
HISTORY, romance, beauty, usefulness — what do you ask of your tables? There was a time, doubtless, when the demand on a table began and ended with that for a raised level surface upon which various objects might be placed. But that time was long ago! In the middle ages there were tables galore— we can still see for ourselves some fine specimens, fortunately preserved to us in various collections—the carved and ornamented furniture that marked the transition, from the austere types of medieval days, to the elaborate developments of the Renaissance; and before any of these, away back in the tenth century, we know that the great Charlemagne gathered his chiefs around him, at a table which probably bore many evidences of their rapidly developing ideas of luxury and civilization.
