THE first illustrations for “The Smoking Flax,” by R. J. C. Stead, arrived recently, and in these H. Weston Taylor has shown his usual ability for depicting scenes and action in the Canadian middle west. The first instalment of this new serial appears in the current issue, and the whole novel will be completed in five huge instalments, in line with the wishes of a number of readers who have written to say that five issues is quite long enough a time to string out the suspense.

J. HERBERT HODGINS
THE rebound in Canada’s trade with the world is one of the most interesting, as well as one of the healthiest indices of the general business recovery. For the twelve-month period, ended May 31, 1924, Canada’s exports amounted to $1,083,005,400, while imported goods to the value of $873,367,700 were received in the Dominion.

IT WAS the first year since he was a boy that Paul Cockett had not spent his summer holiday at Brighton. HAROLD COX
IN AN article in the Daily Mail (London), Harold Cox, in discussing the future of British trade, expresses the opinion, that as soon as a peaceful settlement is reached with Germany, that country will prove a dangerous competitor. Even though a year ago some members of the House of Commons went so far as to point out that a restored Germany might become a serious menace to British trade, politicians as a whole, he says, continue to assume that a restoration of Germany’s industrial activity will mean a boom in British trade: this, in spite of the actual experience of the Ruhr occupation.

BEATRICE M. HAY SHAW
ONE of the minor, but none the less acute, inflictions and afflictions of modern life is the reckless, careless and often deliberate slaughtering of our mother tongue—that language which Sir Henry Newbolt declares is the most musical, most comprehensive and expressive language in the world.

“BURNED again,” Lucia Thorn announced to herself, as she removed a smoking pot of potatoes from the blazing gas. “That makes the third lot of spuds I’ve absolutely ruined this week. Les. will divorce me if I don’t manage better pretty soon.”

BEATRICE HAMILTON
AT THIS season of the year we hear a great deal on the subject of simplifying the family diet. No doubt much of this is practical and helpful from the view-point of economy in both digestion and labor. But having simplified the food and its preparation there still remains the unvaried problem of serving what has been prepared.

Ruthless Rhymes—For concentrated effort it would be hard to beat the famous “Ruthless Rhymes for Heartless Homes.” I have an idea, says E. V. Lucas, that Captain Graham did not actually invent the form—there is, indeed, something rather like it in Max Adeler—but he carried it farther than any predecessor.
