THE Canadian financial situation is in a more healthy condition than it has been for many years past. Despite some disturbing factors, it is certain that Canada has her resources in a satisfactorily liquid form. More than that, the resources are large, as the flotation of the recent conversion loan amply proved.

JOHN NELSON
THE articles on the above subject, of which this is the last, have sought to deal with questions which are of vital concern in each of the provinces. These problems have differed widely in form. The oldest part of the Dominion thinks itself at a disadvantage in relation to a newer section.

THE relationship between joel Paine and his sister Katy had never been an ordinary one; if it had been, few of the events which crowded themselves into that eventful day just before Commencement at Cranford would have occurred. Those seconds, while Katy approached him across the Cranford station platform, probably had more to do with the forming of Joel's future, and Katy’s, than any other single thing since he was born.

LOOKING at it from standpoint, Ontario can never hope to be independent of the United States so far as bituminous coal is concerned." That statement, coming from F. W. Gray, coalmarketing expert of the British Empire Steel Corporation, is a somewhat startling one, and it strikes with all the more force in view of the fact that the organization which Mr. Gray represents is probably the largest miner of bituminous in the Maritime field, and that one of the big problems which it constantly faces is that of pushing its coal farther westward.

THE political market is at the bottom of a bad slump. None but the professionals are taking any part in the game. The general public is giving Us attention to the winter's coal, the wheat crop and other little things that more directly affect human happiness than even the routine news that leaks out from the Imperial Conference, the muffled oratory from the League of Nations or the sharp reports that indicate that the once great German Empire threatens to break up into a series of smaller states.

AT ANY price that I can pay, let me own myself. And the price is worth paying if you can keep what you have bought. For the eternal question still is whether the profit of any concession that a man makes to his Tribe, against the light that is in him, outweighs or justifies the disregard of that light.

PROF. A. M. LOW
WHILE one section of this world of ours is bending its best energies to establish a basis for permanent peace, other sections just now seem quite as active preparing for wars and paving the way for them. The militarists, certain scientists and war propagandists, all of whom no doubt will be found a safe distance back from the firing lines when the conflict opens, are having their “innings” at present telling us how efficient and spectacular will be the hostilities of the future.

ALOOFNESS from affairs in Europe and near-Asia which United States statesmen so often and so readily demonstrate does not appear to extend to United States capitalists when someone shouts “Oil!” United States money interests and United States officially have both become quite alert and quite articulate about the development of the Mesopotamia, Kurdistan and Northeastern Asia Minor oil territories since reports leaked out of the tremendous British developments there.

DOROTHY GRAHAM
PRIMITIVE man, thousands of years ago, ground roots, fruit, the bark of trees and certain grain, mixed them with water, baked them in hot ashes, called it bread, and made it the mainstay of his existence. Through the centuries it has retained its popularity and to-day mechanical science mills a delicate white Hour from the wheat and bread is set on the tables of civilized nations the world over, three times a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year, and is still the principal factor of man’s existence.

EDWINA SETON
Question — Mrs. C. S., Victoria: Could you tell me if seaweed has any commercial value. It is very plentiful around here. Answer—Seaweed contains potash, which is a valuable fertilizer, but the process of extracting it is expensive, the native product not being cheap enough to compete with that produced in Germany, which, since the war, is shipped to Canada and elsewhere.
