More and more evidence is emerging that cannabis is effective in treating alcoholism on both physical and psychological levels. So we asked our audience about drinking and pot. Some tokers say pot makes them crave a cold beer. Others say that smoking pot has resulted in their quitting booze completely.
On December 19th, President Obama commuted the sentences of eight people convicted under harsh mandatory minimum statutes for crimes related to crack distribution. Each had served at least 15 years, and six had been sentenced to life without parole.
First, thanks for your decades of work in support of our favorite plant. I am a longtime subscriber and attended the “Conspiracy Cup” in Amsterdam and the three cups you’ve had here in Colorado. You’ve taught me how to grow, and as a result I have become self-sufficient.
The coming roadside marijuana-detection technologies are misleading and, ultimately, unfair.
“Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol” was the tagline for the successful legalization campaign in Colorado. While the comparison to alcohol regulation made it possible for Colorado voters to accept the idea of legalizing marijuana, it also prompted them to ask: “Where’s the marijuana breathalyzer?” Now we’re witnessing a scramble by drug-detection technology companies to answer that question.
Our most effective pot advocates are those who’ve known the weed for years.
Robert Platshorn, 71 He’s the former “Bobby Tuna” of the infamous Black Tuna Gang, which smuggled 500 tons of pot into the US during the 1970s. The gang was eventually taken down by the FBI and DEA, and Platshorn served nearly 30 years in federal prison before successfully reinventing himself as a medical marijuana advocate.
In his sixth year as President, Barack Obama finally said, in an online New Yorker magazine interview, that cannabis is actually less dangerous than alcohol “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.” However, he qualified his position: “It’s not something I encourage, and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy.”
Last year at the Ann Arbor Hash Bash, the rally got underway with a rousing rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” It’s a practice that we hope all organizations will undertake at their special events in the future. The Hash Bash takes place April 5 on the University of Michigan campus and 4/20 celebrations are everywhere.
Toronto’s Rob Ford already holds the title of “World’s Most Outrageous Mayor.” He earned that last year when he explained away his crack-cocaine use in a series of perverse press conferences at which he also steadfastly refused to resign.
In a January interview with ESPN, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell left the policy door open for pro football players to eventually use legal medical marijuana—even if he never did actually utter the M-word. Asked if players would ever be allowed to toke up in states where it’s legal, Goodell replied: “I don’t know what’s going to develop as far as the next opportunity for medicine to evolve and to help either deal with pain or help deal with injuries, but we will continue to support the evolution of medicine.”
Homeland Security investigations in New Mexico have discovered that crystal meth tinted blue is on the market. Apparently inspired by the hit show Breaking Bad, some Heisenberg wannabe is producing crank with a blue hue, which the Feds claim is used by meth distributors to hype their product.
The Los Angeles Police Department plans to aggressively expand the use of saliva-swab drug-testing in a program that seems intended to target medical pot patients, including those pulled over for traffic stops. Previously used only at checkpoints and in three jails, the increased swab testing will be funded by a half-million-dollar grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In Alaska, a new legalization initiative is likely to appear on the statewide ballot in November. The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana has gathered more than 50 percent over the number of signatures required to qualify for the ballot. Even with the percentage of signatures that are normally deemed invalid, the total should be more than enough to place the initiative before voters.
Actor Bill Murray has never hid his pot opinions and, while promoting Monuments Men in January, he spoke boldly for bud on one of Reddit’s AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions: “People are realizing that the War on Drugs is a failure—that the amount of money spent, you could have bought all the drugs with that much money rather than create this army of people and incarcerated people.
In its latest annual Southeast Asia Opium Survey, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime found that opium production in Burma continued to increase in 2013—up 26 percent to an estimated 870 metric tons, the highest amount since the United Nations began keeping track in 2002.
Broad city vaults Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson to stardom
Perhaps you’ve heard: New York City can be cruel— especially if you believe the refrain from “New York, New York,” the city’s unofficial anthem: “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.” Think again. Or watch Broad City, the new series from Comedy Central, wherein two young women do battle with the comic cruelty that the Big Apple dishes out on a daily basis.
For Dr. Dog, time flies on the road to success when you get high with your friends.
Dr. Dog exist in that comfortable netherworld between huge cult fandom and almost-but-not-quite mainstream success, alongside other tuneful underground near-crossovers like the National and the New Pornographers. Over the last few years, the Philadelphia sextet’s shambling indie psych-pop palette has widened to embrace ’60s garage-soul, even as their new label, Epitaph imprint ANTI-, has extended their reach and helped bring their long-simmering talent to a commercial boil.
Transcendent drone rockers Guardian Alien know their meta ... and their marijuana.
We all know the feeling of hearing new music that you can’t pinpoint exactly, other than that it’s being played by musicians who clearly need to do something new. The music tickles your mind, makes you think a little bit more about what you think you know—and, meanwhile, you’re stompin’ your feet and smacking your head against a wall.
Avant-blues troopers The Numbers Band reissue a rare classic.
Ohio-centric label Exit Stencil Recordings steps up and reissues this lost classic on vinyl for the first time since its initial 1976 release. In northeast Ohio, The Numbers Band is legend, renowned for rollicking live shows dense with extended jams and percolating rhythms.
All right, last month you learned how to make sugared nuts, courtesy of Jim from Mediholics.com. This month we’ll use some more of Jim’s amazing Green Dragon sugar recipe (April ’14) and then up the ante with medicated butter, too. To illustrate the effectiveness of said combination, I’ll retell a story that Jim told me.
Professor Afghani's 1996 guide to high-yield harvesting changed the cultivation scene.
In the fall of 1996, I was a 24-year-old recent transplant from Boston to New York City looking for some kind of job or career but to be honest, really just struggling to survive day to day. Years before, a friend in Boston had shown me his small closet grow and I was obsessed with making it happen for myself.
The US Price Index continued to rise after hitting a record low of $286 in March, finishing May at $314 an ounce (+$12 from April). While the Kind and Mids indices essentially held steady, the Schwag Index ended May $17 above its previous month's average, and Girl Scout Cookies made the top five submitted strains for the first time in 2014.

Who woulda thunk? Suddenly, in Colorado, people have the freedom to walk into a store and purchase legal marijuana over the counter. Not only are the times-a-changin’—they’ve changed! And a whole lot more change is coming!
Don’t Forget About Medical
On November 9, 1989, the East German government announced: “Permanent relocations can be done through all border check-points of the GDR [East Germany] into the FRG [West Germany] or West Berlin.” Thousands of people rushed out into the streets that night to demolish the 67-mile-long Berlin Wall, which isolated West Berlin from the surrounding East German state, and celebrate.

Controlling your environment is the key to a healthy growroom, and cleanliness is the most important factor. Here are a few common plagues and how to rid your garden of them properly.
Dust in the Wind
New Pot-Plague Alert: Tobacco Mosaic Virus
Your plants don’t like a dusty environment. It clogs the pores on the surface of the leaves, making the plants work harder for the necessary stuff of green life. Green is good, and photosynthesis can grind to a halt without fresh air reaching the leaves.

THC: How High Can We Go?
Yes, you read that correctly! Our annual review of the world's most potent cannabis strains—as tested by our partner labs around the globe— has taken another big step forward, raising the bar this year to include only strains that have tested at over 23% THC! This represents a significant increase from years past, when the threshold was a mere 20%, and it's surely a testament to our growing culture, legalization efforts and, of course, the cultivation skills and genetics trading of those setting the pace on the new frontiers in Colorado, Washington and California.
Alex Barak was either an ex-Mossad agent, an organized crime figure, or both, depending on who you ask. One fact not in dispute is that he was a major supporter of medical marijuana, which helped ease his pain after he was gravely injured in an attempt on his life that remains unsolved to this day.

The voice on the other end of Alex Barak's phone on the evening of July 14, 2003 asked him about some used furniture that Barak had put up for sale after the bar and cafe he ran for a few years in central Tel Aviv went under. Barak ventured downstairs, and moments later a gunman opened fire from point-blank range, then fled on foot and disappeared without a trace.

Thinking about plant food on an illuminating level.
Light, Energy & Kinetics
Featured Strain of the Month: Sour Amnesia
Recently, a reader wrote in to the High Times Cultivation Department asking about a different type of plant food than what we normally think of in terms of feeding a garden. Usually, we discuss things like the N-P-K (nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium) ratio of different fertilizers, or the pros and cons of organic versus synthetic nutrient programs.
Nutrient schedules, growing on a budget, cloning success, mother-plant selection and more....
I sent in a question a few weeks back about the best way to sex regular seeds, and even though you haven’t answered it directly on your show yet, I have come to the conclusion (based on another question-and-answer and the panel discussion in Episode 49 of your podcast) that sexing a cutting is the way to go.
How does testing strains for THC concentration work? Alysha Toast Jones Hi Alysha, Gas chromatography is the technique of choice. Roughly, a machine blasts an inert gas through a solution containing a sample of the plant material. Each of the constituents of the plant, including THC, will be propelled a slightly different distance and land on a column made of glass or metal in a specific spot.
An American makes the first portable n-butane for the BHO market.
When it comes to butane hash oil, experts agree that laboratory grade n-butane is the cleanest, most effective solvent for extracting concentrates from cannabis. Historically, this gas has only been available in bulk cylinders from specialty gas suppliers or in portable cans from overseas.
Recalling some cannabis-fueled camping trips with my metalhead college crew.
It may seem hard to believe, but I actually began my college career as a finance major. While I never ended up using most of what I learned at Baruch College, I did make some fateful friends there—like Darren, a fellow DJ at the college radio station (which I’ll elaborate on in a future column), and Delia, who both got me my job at High Times and introduced me to my pal Andrew.
Even as America gets on board the legal-cannabis train, professional and college athletes can still see their careers derailed.

Why test athletes for cannabis? The traditional answer given by sport leagues and team owners is that cannabis is illegal. No longer. Twenty-one states now allow medical access to cannabis for qualified patients; 17 states have decriminalized possession.
A local organizer helps move one New England state closer to legalization.
In 2012 David Boyer, a young man from Maine, decided to actively support the one presidential candidate he saw as promoting an agenda for liberty, so he began working for former Texas Representative Ron Paul's campaign in the state. With help from Boyer and other grassroots organizers, Paul placed second in the overall primary voting and went on to win 20 of Maine’s 24 delegates going into the Republican National Convention in Tampa.
