My plane was on the tarmac, ready for takeoff. Then the pilot announced that we'd be returning to the gate. There were no complaints among the passengers: Furious wind ripped across the run way, and a steady drumbeat of sleet pinged off the plane.
It was refreshing to read "Weeditopia Emerging" in the May 2009 issue of HIGH TIMES. Growing outdoors in the sunshine is how this plant was meant to live. Thanks for all your efforts in helping to legalize this harmless plant, and thanks for a great magazine over all these years.
Ever since Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps found himself in hot water over his infamous bong hit, he’s been an abject wimp, sniveling on and on to the media about what a terrible mistake he made. So when Phelps appeared on the Today show recently, it was business as usual: “It was an awful judgment,” he repeated.
When you reach the absolute center of the United States, what do you do? You celebrate with some local Afghooey, of course. Unfortunately, you’ll be celebrating alone, because America’s geographic center lies 21 miles outside the small town of Belle Fourche, SD, in the middle of the prairie.

Donald Tashkin, a pulmonary specialist at the University of California at Los Angeles who has studied the effects of marijuana for 30 years, acknowledged that the findings "were against our expectations.
In the 1970s, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller championed a draconian and disastrous set of Law-enforcement policies with the stated goal of stemming drug abuse. By implementing Lengthy "mandatory minimum" prison sentences—which effectively took the sentencing authority away from judges and gave it to ambitious district attorneys instead—these laws resulted in serious overcrowding in the state prisons, which were used to warehouse nonviolent, low-level drug offenders at taxpayer expense, without any actual disruption of the drug trade.
When cops in Barcelona, Spain, sprayed a special drug-detecting chemical on the cast of a Chilean man with a broken leg, it turned blue. Amazingly, the entire two-pound cast was made of compressed cocaine. The cops also discovered that the six-pack of beer the man was carrying, plus two small, hollowed-out stools he'd brought along, were stuffed with coke—nearly 11 pounds in all, including the cast.
An Italian shepherd driving into the mountains of the Alto Adige to spend an extended period of time with his sheep was stopped by police and arrested after they discovered 1.3 ounces of pot in his possession. Every competent joint roller has his or her own preferred (and well-practiced) technique for creating the perfect spliff. Some meticulously prepare cylindrical cones with "pre-built" filters, while others may use a rolling machine or dollar bill to tighten up their doob or blunt.
Twelve years ago, Dr. Timothy Leary died. An unabashed champion of LSD, Leary spurred a monumental change in spiritual and social awareness in the `60s and early `70s. Harry Shearer became an actor at the age of seven, at the urging of his piano teacher. As a kid on the Jack Benny Show, he once told me, when the cast was doing a read-through, there was a line in the script where "I just got it in my mind to do it with a slight Brooklyn accent—and when I did that, Benny just started howling, banging the table and laughing."
